I was reading some threads and someone used this verse to answer something someone was asking. I am wondering what are peoples understanding of this passage?

Mark 11:22-25
"Have faith in God," Jesus answered. "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

I guess i am wondering how literally people take this?

Anj, I believe it for exactly what it says. However, most modern translators would agree that there could be a slight error in most translations including the original King James. The word "FAITH" could also mean "FAITHFULNESS" so in other words the translation could also read:

"Have FAITHFULNESS in God," Jesus answered. "I tell you...."

Which changes the meaning entirely, from simply just believing ("have faith") to actually having to act on that that belief by living a life in obedience ("have faithfulness"). Keep in mind that scripture does say that obedience is better than sacrifice....

*lol* CMW... I agree completely! Walking in obedience and walking in His will, in my opinion anyways, mean the same thing. We must be aware of His will in order to walk in obedience.

Well, Jesus said this to his disciples after they noticed the fig tree he cursed had withered and died...

I believe Jesus was having a hard day, he was hungry, the fig had no fruit on it (actually it wasnt the right season) so he got a little upset and cursed it and it died. I think I would too if a tree had no fruit and I was hungry.

But no that explanation is not spiritual enough for the average Joe Christian is it? So a more metaphorical meaning might be..

It was to teach his disciples about faith, and show that the fruitless fig tree (the Jewish nation) would wither away.

Mat 21:21 Jesus answered and said to them, Truly I say to you, If you have faith and do not doubt, you shall not only do this miracle of the fig tree, but also; if you shall say to this mountain, Be moved and be thrown into the sea; it shall be done.

Peter tried doing this when he used great faith to walk on the water out to Jesus.

The lesson to us is, nothing is impossible with God, pray about everything, don't doubt.

I take it a literally as you can. Anything we ask God to do in Jesus name if we believe we will receive it we will. The key is believing God can and will do what He says he can and will do. If we can believe we can receive.

If it's according to God's will. The key to faith isn't the subject of the faith (us) it's the object of faith (Christ).

One basic RULE of Bible study is to observe not only the speaker but the audience.

The parallels of Mark 11:23-24 are Matthew 17:19-20 and Luke 17:5-6. These both more clearly indicate that these statements were made to the Apostles only. Let us be very careful not to lay hold of promises that were made to others which are limited. Doing so often leads to disappointment, disillusionment, and destruction of faith. Not every promise is universal any more than is every command. After all nobody but Noah ever built an Ark did they?

i mean basically anj, why would we want to ask a mountian to move, like a real mountian? yea, i mean God's point was, having faith. just like jesus telling us to have faith as a mustard seed. Do you know how big a mustard seed is? they are real small, check one out. So than also, whatever we ask for in prayer beliving, meaning having faith, that it will be ours. Do a faith study if you want, i think it will really bless you. Jesus is always increasing our Faith, and there is nothing wrong with asking God for more faith than what you have now. and there is a scripture to go with that, but i don't have it in front of me, but i will get it later and post it on her as an example.
God bless you and love you sis!

someone used the verse out of context i believe, which made me wonder what others thought, that is why i poseted this thread. I find it intresting to hear others opinions because sometimes you can learn from them. I think God's will plays the key to what we ask for. The thing is, sometimes God answers no to us, and that is his will. People need to be prepared for that at times.
I have no doubt when it comes to God being able to do anything. I have been blessed with hard times where i have had to live on faith, and God took care of me :)

"Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God"

"If you abide in my word you will know the truth and the truth will set you free"

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path"
