What if after eating the fruit, Adam and Eve repented and asked for forgiveness?

In Genesis, we see them hiding as if they could actually conceal what they did and then blaming when God confronted them. The results of sin were immediate.

But I wonder if things be different now if they chose a different path such as confessing their sin up front (i.e. seeking God instead of hiding) and asking for forgiveness instead of seeking to place blame

No, there would of still have been a need for a work of atonement to bring man back to the same fellowship that was before the fall.

I believe they would have been forgiven; but the consequences of their sin would not have been reversed.

If a person starts a fire and people die and houses are destroyed; he can be forgiven if he repents and seeks forgiveness: but the damage cannot be undone.
