What is a Christian? Is it simply a person who calls himself a Christian, or do you first have to accept responsibility, and if so, what is the responsibility you have to accept?

A Christian is a follower of Jesus.

John 13:35
By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

There are many people within the church, even in here (more than should be) that claim to be christian, and it seems to me that they have no idea as to what a Christian really is. A true Christian is completely submitted to Christ, have died to their flesh and ALL fleshly desires. There are people is this forum who teach that abortion is ok, that homosexuality and pre-marital sex is fine, that drinking hard liquor is no sin, and the Obama is a good man. It is truly mind boggling what passes for a christian now days. However they will still have to stand before God and be judged by His standards, regardless of what this words accepts.

Matthews 7
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

All of you that think you can live in lawlessness, continue to rebel against God, and chronically commit sin after your ''salvation'' have got another thing coming when you come face to face with Jesus on Judgment Day.

The only way you can recognize a true Christian is by their fruits.

I agree....I joined this forum with the hope that I would find encouragement and to strengthen my Christian walk and perhaps be able to help others where possible, as there are many things that I struggle with, instead I find bickering and arguing and blatant disregard for the Word of God. People who profess Jesus as their Lord but have their own agenda. Satanic avatars, insensitive and sarcastic replies to those that are new to our Lord......what to do?

May we all pray for one another as good, charitable Christians should. :)

That sounds as though a Christian is only someone who has attained perfection. Is that what you mean?

To answer the original question, a Christian is someone who has been validly baptised. However, for a more practical usage of the word 'Christian', they would also be actively trying to follow Christ.

Stick around we need more with your attitude here. Maybe you and might not agree on everything but you seem like one who can hold an intelligent and interesting conversation. Let it not be a great wonder why satan would send his minions on here to spread chaos.

Wow watchmen, According to your gospel you yourself would be disqualified. Me too, even Jesus battled His flesh in the garden so we might as well throw Him out to. It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh profits nothing. I find it interesting that you throw Obama in with the other sin. Although it is true no man is good, no, not one.

I would consider a christian some who has been born again, that is, of God. They will show fruit as seen in Matthew 5, and if your wondering if your really a christian, in the faith that is, 1 John is a good book to read to find out. I don't believe everyone who says they are a christian actually is, if that were true, 70% of the USA would be looking to Christ.

A true Christian would definitely be moving toward perfection through the help and empowerment received by them from the infilling of God's Holy Spirit.

We all battle with the flesh, but we cannot loose that battle, Paul said he died daily, Jesus never once lost a battle with His flesh.

look Christ did not battle His flesh He was God and Man yet so it was the Devil who tempted Him not His flesh. and supporting Obama is kinda bad it's like saying "hey i'm a christian but i applaud gay marriage and abortion"

But surely everyone's at a different stage of sanctification? So would it not be unwise to claim someone's not a true Christian just because of some of your observations about their behaviour?

It would be even more unwise to think a sinner is a christian, just because they say they are.

We are still prone to sin but the difference is we repent of it and cry out to God to help us deal with it. but maddog you can tell when a person just a false convert by their fruits you can tell even when they are getting sanctified because they will conform more to Christ

Amen Phoenix, we all struggle to do what is right, but a true Christian will repent when they mess up and keep up the good fight. Not claim their sin is not sin or that it is ok to sin ect....
