That is one purpose for fasting, in fact that is the church taught purpose of fasting but let me ask this question; If we fast with the intention of seeking God's will for us in service to Him and He shows us that will, does that not draw you closer to God as you help others in Jesus name?

I find myself closest to God when I go forward in His name to serve others.

Just a thought!

well its draws you closer in doing that yes,, but fasting is something awesome between that us and the Lord.. and yes thank you for the thought God Bless
