Lazarus was in Sheol, awaiting with all the OT Saints for Christ to break it open.

Ecclesiastes 3

19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
Im going to have to study the whole chapter, 3 verses are not enough. Yes, the body returns to the ground, but the soul goes to heaven or hell.

I would contest that heaven and hell both don't fully exist yet. We know heaven is the new earth, paradise restored... And the lost get thrown into hell after the white throne judgment.

yea, this is why I was saying "Paradise", not "Heaven".
I guess it's just splitting hairs, but whatever.
Hell exists in the form of Hades and Tartarus, but not the Lake of Fire(Gehenna). That is a future Judgement.
The righteous await the Last Day in Abraham's Bosom/Paradise, and the wicked await the Last Day in Hades... or perhaps even in Tartarus(although that may be only reserved for bound demons).

some say that when we die, we immediately find ourselves at the marriage supper of the lamb, but that isn't a sound doctrine from my understanding.

Heaven exists currently, Gods abode, but a new one will be created. Hell gets tossed in the lake of fire.

No, I don't believe he went to heaven. But I don't believe anyone who dies goes to heaven. I believe they sleep in the grave waiting for judgement. When the Lord returns for his people the dead in Christ rise together....

Heaven.

2 Corinthians 5:8

King James Version (KJV)

8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Ecclesiastes 12:7

King James Version (KJV)

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

your bodies rise as they meet your souls that come in the clouds when Jesus comes after the tribulation.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

zech 14:[SUP]5 [/SUP]And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

Jude 1:[SUP]14 [/SUP]And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

[SUP]15 [/SUP]To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

so we have bodies rising from the grave, glorified, and saints (souls of the bodies) coming in the clouds. The souls in heaven in Revelations wearing the white raiment are the same souls that come in the clouds. When you die, your body doesnt go to heaven, it stays here in the dirt.

I've always wondered about the saints who were raised when Jesus died.

Matt 27:52The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

They may have been raised in glorified bodies and went back to heaven after they appeared to many, but I rather think they had physical bodies like Lazarus did. But were they cognizant that they had once been in heaven and come back, or were they unaware? It appears they were great witnesses no matter what. I don't want to speculate since the text doesn't say. A definite miracle, a surprise, another great proof of the awesome meaning of Christ's death.

This is what Jesus said about Lazarus

John 11:11-14 KJV
(11) These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
(12) Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
(13) Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
(14) Then said Jesus unto them plainly,
Lazarus is dead.

You have the wrong Lazarus. Lazarus the beggar is not the same as Lazarus of Bethany. You have made a serious error.

I know they are not the same but this thread is about the Lazarus Jesus raised not the Lazarus in the parable.

Lazarus the beggar went to Sheol, the underworld of the dead. It was divided into two compartments, Abraham's Bosom and Hades. Abraham's Bosom was a place of rest and comfort while Hades was a place of torment. This is very clear from the context.

Yes Lazarus the beggar is never identified as Lazarus of Bethany. To tie them together as one and the same is poor exegesis.

I think it would be good if you stick to the story about the Lazarus mentioned and not go off into something else.

Because Lazarus of Bethany was not a beggar.

You were the one who brought up Lazarus of John 11:11-14. Not I.

You know the story. I have been pondering this question. I heard a preacher say " Lazarus was in heaven and Jesus brought him back to earth". I don't think I believe this. If this is true do you think Lazarus wanted to go back?
Yes, I did.

He died he went to Hades which in the KJV is translated hell. this word corresponds to the Hebrew word sheol which is translated 31 x as hell; 31 x as grave; and 3 x as pit in the KJV which essentially means the grave. Jesus resurrected Lazarus; in other words restored life to him
