not only could we not reach up a hand....we were clueless we needed rescue!
in fact, i'd say until the Holy Spirit regenerates us, we don't...can't even want God.
But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. For this reason it says,
“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.” (Eph 5:13-14)

I remember that mind of darkness but I only knew of it after God gave me Light to understand. When we are in darkness, we don't know that we are and even if someone told us, we'd deny it. God has to show us that we are in darkness.
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1: 4-5
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
