OK, this came up in another thread, what are your thoughts? Is the universe 6,000 years old or is it older? Perhaps much older?

If you take the Bible as your only source of information (as we should) 6,000 years...

There have been a couple discussions about this question and they have become quite "heated" a couple of times. My question would be this. Why "must" we know how old the earth or creation is? I don't ask this question to be a "jerk" but for my wondering why this would be such an "important" thing to know. I personally never wondered this but wondering why others question this.

Scriptures please.
Where in the bible it says that there was a war before genesis ?
Where does the bible say that the earth was void because of that war ?
God kingdom will come on the 8000 year
The feast of tabernacles depicts this

6 days for man 7th day for God

6000 years for mankind
7000th year is GOd

When do you suppose this happened?

Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
Isa 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
Isa 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Eze 28:12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
Eze 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
Eze 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
Eze 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Eze 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Eze 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

And what was the result?

Joel 2:3 (KJV)

2A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness,
as the morning spread upon the mountains:

a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like,
neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

3A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth:
the land is as the garden of Eden before them,
and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.

who are a great people in this verse

A theory arose among some Bible scholars to attempt to give answer to the rising tide of evolutionists that were was an older world filled with a history conforming to the old earth theory. They decided it contained "pre-Adamite humans", and it was ruled by Satan. Then God destroyed it in the first world-wide flood. All that was said to have happened between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2.

It is an embarrassment for modern scholars. Had they held off on that they would have enjoyed seeing the scientific evidences against an old earth, and through true science methods recognize the fact of a very creation of the universe. Like Israel remaining blind to Jesus, evolutionists (typically atheist) remain blinded, and so do those that believe in the former "Gap world".
The Bible doesn't mention that at all, but there are many references to the world-wide flood of Noah.

Scientific study of earth today has much evidence that practically everything of the earth's crust was formed in its present condition by that flood. We've already discussed that in full on those other threads, neither side giving an inch.

The importance of taking the literal sequence of Biblical records, using genealogies from Adam to Jesus, ought to be more than just using faith. Reading the first 12 chapters of Genesis supplies an unbroken history with genealogies. The prophets of old, Jesus, the disciples made direct references to Creation week and the flood as literal truths. God's entire plan of redemption is built on what happened in the Garden of Eden.

If a person erases Genesis, there is no need of the rest of the Bible, as there would be no first man Adan who sinned, therefore not requiring the second man Jesus to come to redeem man. If a person tinkers with Genesis, such as preaching the Gap theory, then he or she distorts Genesis and adds to the inspired word from God. As a teenager I read a book about that gap world full of dinosaurs, giants, monsters, cruel gods, a story similar to Greek mythology, and that shaped my attitude about Christianity such that I had no interest in that for decades.

So, how was it that the Devil was there in the garden?

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Gen 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

He was not always the Devil...

Eze 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

Hmmm, had to have happened before Gen 3:1

The garden was God habitable part of the earth where He would come and talk to Adam and eve the angels were there also on the earth at these times

Proverbs 8:30-31King James Version (KJV)

30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

The devil has not been brought to the sides of the pit as yet

Well, obviously we see this differently. I believe that the rebellion of Satan and the resulting war was responsible for the earth becoming in tohu and bohu (chaos and confusion) in Gen 1:2.

Although this proves nothing, there is no record of Lucifer interacting with Adam and Eve, there is a record of Satan the Devil interacting with them. But as I said, the lack of record does not prove anything.

No, he is dealt with before the Last Great Day...

Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

why did the devil choose a snake and not appear in person to Eve ?
When did the angels become ministering spirits to man ?
