The jogger started to catch his breath as he flopped onto the grass for a much-anticipated rest. His mind wandered as he lay on his back, staring up at the sky and noticing the way the soft, puffy clouds mottled it so irregularly and yet so perfectly with shades of white and light gray.
He saw a small brown bird fly into his field of vision, and his thoughts turned to the wonder of flight. He thought, as had many people before him, about how glorious it must be to soar through the air and feel so disconnected from the Earth. To have an unmatched vantage point for viewing activities in which you had no obligation to partake!
And then his cell phone rang, and he heaved himself off the grass and brushed himself off. He walked slowly to his car, trying not to think about how much of his precious weekend was being wasted by talking to his boss on the phone. He was totally unaware that a small brown bird had landed in a nearby shrub and was watching him with that odd, intense look that wild animals use to confound us.
Even if he had noticed the bird, he would have had no way of knowing that the bird was thinking about how wonderful it must be to drive! To be able to cover great distances so quickly, without expending much energy. To travel when it was raining or cold, and stay perfectly dry, perfectly warm, all while sitting on a cushioned seat! The little bird imagined what a help something like that would be during his migration. Those cars, those cars... how he hated them! He could not love them, appreciate them... so he hated them.
Suddenly, filled with jealousy, the little brown bird flew off of his perch and soiled the jogger's windshield as he passed over it, feeling slightly better but still far from compensated for the hardships he endured during his long journeys both Spring and Fall.
