The Second Trumpet
Then the second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned to blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. - Rev.8:8

Taking the whole context into consideration, I believe that what John was seeing in his vision was a future asteroid, as it indeed would look like a large mountain. And I believe that the reference of it burning with fire is because in his vision John was seeing this object as it was entering the earth’s atmosphere, which would indeed cause it to be on fire. The fact that it hits in one of the oceans tells me that it would have to be of considerable size in order for it to get through earth’s atmosphere without being burned up.
The results of this object hitting in one of the oceans is that, a third of the creatures in the sea die and a third of the ships are destroyed. What I believe the scripture is saying is that, all creatures in that body of water are killed which will equal a third in comparison to the entire earth. I believe that it is the same with the ships that are destroyed, i.e. all of the ships in that body of water will be destroyed equaling a third in comparison to all the ships on the earth.
Now based on the information in this scripture, let’s look underneath at, what is not said, in order to get a better understanding of the other results caused by this object hitting in one of the oceans. First of all, I believe the reason why the creatures die and the ships are destroyed, is because when that object hits that body of water it will create enormous waves that will be traveling very fast across that ocean in every direction, 360 degrees. Because of the speed and the resulting turbulence under and on top of that body of water, no living creature, whether big or small, will survive. It will be the same for every ship, for no ship whether pleasure craft, oil tankers, or military ships will survive, whether out at sea or docked near the shore.
Now here are some other things to consider: how many people will be on those ships? If you have a third of the total number of ships on the earth being destroyed, then again there is going to be a large number of fatalities.
Since these enormous waves will be traveling at high speed across the ocean, once they begin to approach the shore they will become even bigger because of the water becoming shallower. These enormous Tsunami waves will make the ones that hit Japan several years ago, look like ripples in a pond in comparison, and look at the damage they did only being 35 feet high. Now imagine waves over 1000 feet high and moving towards every shore in that body of water.
In addition, when these waves hit the coasts they will completely wipe out every city, town and village for a hundred or so miles inland depending on the size, speed and angle of this object which will affect every shore that touches that body of water for 360 degrees. Once again, there will be a very large unknown number of fatalities as a result. Regarding this, I’m reminded of the movie “Deep Impact” with Morgan Freeman and Elijah Woods.
Therefore, as you can see there is a lot more resulting form this trumpet judgment than just a third of the creatures being killed and a third of the ships being destroyed when considering the cause and which most people read over without realizing.
In regards to John’s reference to “a third of the sea turning to blood” I believe that it may have appeared to him to be blood, but could have been the coloring of the water as a result of that object hitting the water and disturbing the sediment at the bottom and/or could have been due to the chemical make up of the object, or even caused by red algae that as we have seen turns ocean water blood red.
I tend to believe that it was not literal blood because the volume of water in the ocean vs. the blood of the creatures would not be enough to turn a third of the ocean into literal blood. I believe that John may have referred to it turning to blood based on the water turning a reddish color. However, there just isn’t enough information to know for sure and so all we can do is speculate on what causes this.
