Hi everyone, Anyone think it's inappropriate discipline to Give a Detention to a high school student for accidentally not locking their PE lock. This is an Good AP student and been at the school for years. with No prior discipline problems. There are signs on the wall stating please close your lock so the teacher thinks she is justified to give detentions for this. The student thought they pushed it close but it wasn't completely lock so Detention???

Are you sure that is the whole story?

If the student talked back and had an attitude, then it would be detention for insubordination not the lock.

If it was just the lock, a reminder/warning seems more appropriate, but without knowing all the facts it's hard to say.

I think this is the kind of thing where the parent just calls the principal...
and they have a chat.

This reminded me of something that happened to me in the 6th grade. The announcements were on in the intercom, and I asked my classmate for the time. When the announcements were over, my teacher had me sign the log for lunch detention. I guess it was because I was talking during announcements.

I showed up the next day to lunch detention. He went on and on about how disappointed he was in me. I didn’t care lol. I did my time and left.

What type of school does kid go to? The only time my daughter is late after school is because she Can't get her locker open! LOL... That is way cool that this kid attends a school that he is comfortable enough to forget to put the lock on..

Or just let the kid serve dentention.

If you contacted one assistant principal and nothing happened, another will not change the verdict.

They have to hold up the teacher's authority and unless he/she abuses it, then follow the rules set. Locking your locker is so your things don't get stollen, sounds like a good rule.

Maybe there has been a rash of stealing and the teacher made a point to remind everyone to lock their lockers?

Or maybe the teacher is a stickler for rules and just very strict?

If the rule is to lock your locker and the kid did not, then the kid broke the rule.

If someone breaks the rule, the they have to face the consequences. Complaining and having a bad attitude will just cause more problems, especially if it's done by the parent.

Life is unjust, without knowing the full details of why etc. I don’t know if
it’s unjust or not. But maybe turn it into a life lesson about injustice and
how to deal with it when it happens to you or when it happens to others.

There are far more important things in life than a minor detention to get hot and
bothered about.

People languish in prison for simply owning a bible.

Cast systems keep people in poverty just because they were born into the
wrong family.

People get murdered just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Maybe use the event to do a bible study on the following.

Micah 6:8 NKJV
[8] He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD
require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

Only getting one side, I can't say what's appropriate. I wasn't there to know the rules or either party involved. Sorry I'd have to side with the school right now...not knowing all the facts.
