Pressing Matters Of Jesus

The Garden of Gethsemane (meaning in Hebrew Oil Press) where olive trees would be harvested. The olives would be crushed to extract the olive oil.
Jesus symbolically and physically visited this garden hours before he would be arrested and crucified. During those hours of prayer he was spiritually crushed (Isiah 53:5) blood perspired from His pores (Luke 22:44) much like the olives around him.

Olive oil was used for ceremonial purposes in the temple, for anointing the sick with prayers of healing both spiritual and physical, cooking/eating, oil lamps (light), and soap (cleansing).

CEREMONIAL PURPOSES

Jesus was being sacrificed for the sins of the world (the ceremonial reflection of the Passover, the lamb sacrifice, and scapegoat).

ANOINTING THE SICK
Jesus healed the sick (the curse of sin) through the resurrection. Jesus is known as the great physician who offers spiritual and physical healing. Spiritually through Jesus Christ's sacrifice and physically through answered prayers, miracles, or guiding us from the harm of sin. We must protect our hearts.

Olive oil has been proven to be extremely heart-healthy.

Researchers found those who ate more than half a tablespoon of olive oil each day had a 15% lower risk of having any kind of cardiovascular disease and a 21% lower risk of coronary heart disease. -American Heart Association

James 4:8 New International Version
8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Symbolically olive oil is heart-healthy. But it is Jesus who helps purify our hearts from sin.

COOKING/EATING

Olive oil was used to make unleavened bread. The same type of bread Jesus tore symbolically during the last supper. "While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Jesus also spoke of Himself as the Bread of life.

John 6:35 New International Version
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

Spiritually we find healing.

OIL LAMPS (LIGHT)

Olive oil was used for lighting lamps. Jesus in John 8:12 speaks of Himself as the Light of the World. Jesus is considered the Logos (Greek for Word).

John 8:12 New International Version
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

In John 1:1-5, 14 we see the Word was at the beginning with God, was God, all things were made through the Word, the Word ( verse 4 In him was life) He was the light of all mankind. He shined into the darkness and darkness could not overcome Him.

John 1 New International Version
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

And God said (spoke, words) Let there be light. He shined into the darkness and darkness could not overcome Him.

Genesis 1:3 NIV
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

In us is the light of God, in him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The human spirit depends every second on God who breathes life into us.

Proverbs 20:27 New International Version
27 The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord, that sheds light on one’s inmost being.

Without the breath and Spirit of God, we would be dead.

Job 33:4 New International Version
4 The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

It is Jesus who fuels our light!

SOAP (CLEANSING)

Olive oil is used to also make soap and this symbolizes how God cleanses us of our sins and washes us white as snow.

1 John 1:9 English Standard Version
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Remember in the days leading up to Easter what Jesus's sacrifice was all about. Meditate on it. Jesus as your Messiah, Jesus as your Great Physician, Jesus who gives you eternal life, Jesus who is the Light and your guide, Jesus who cleanses you of your sin.
