I am a mother of 3 the oldest being 9 a girl. Trying to get her involved in our new way of life is not working. Shewill not read the princess bible w bought her, listens to music she knows we dont approve of even before we became christians. How do i break through to her before she hits the teenage years? I feel it is my duty as a parent to teach her the ways and word of Jesus. Any suggestions would help greatly.

I am assuming she is taken to church on a regular basis, where she hears the word and its taught on her level thru sunday school and such, id be careful about forcing a 9 yr old to read the bible which can be extremely difficult for an adult to comprehend at times let alone a child .try the bible story books ,if she wont read it let her hear you reading it to the smaller children. As far as the music shes listening to,if u are very sure this music is harmful to her ...simple ..if its in her room..take out the system its bein played on unless she agrees to listen to apprpriate music, keep in mind what we parents may just 'not like' doesnt necessarly make it wrong. in either case you are the parent, its your call.. well, i can share with you what God was teaching me and still does. I was a single mom raising my kids for over ten years. Two boys. When i first came back to christ my kids did not exactly feel the same as i did. My older son at the time was like 13 and did not want to go to church, so i said you can go one day and not two days out of the week. Anyways, after a while, and lots of prayer, He was born agian, saved. But i did make him to go a camp once with the church, and that was a turning point. he did not want to go, and when he came back, he was changed. Praise God. Don't give up. I will tell you what i did and still do, i pray for my boys all the time. Start spending maybe more time in prayer, not that you don't, but the things you want to see change in your life and your family, ask God for those things and than watch the beauty of the Lord unfold right infront of your very eyes. Don't worry sis, God is faithful even when we are not. One of the best gifts you can give your child is jesus. spend some devotional time before bed.ask her if you can pray with her, and share some scripture. you can read a verse or two before she goes to bed. God's word changes us and His holy spirit. Here is a great verse for you sis....
Isa 55:11So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper [in the thing] for which I sent it
So even if you think she is not listening, her spirit is. I would pray with both of my sons before bed, and they loved it, even if we were having a bad night. Know as christians we are going to have spiritual battle in our homes because satan loves division, so somtimes we have to stop and pray when things are getting kind of crazy. Give her to God and keep praying.

oh yea and as for music, you are the mom and you can choose if you want. but if its more secular, and the lyrics are not bad than i would not worry. And like merry heart was saying its how you live too. your children will learn by your example. Did you just give your lives to christ? are you new christians? oh and its kind of hard for a while because you have to undo some things if you did not raise your kids on our Rock Jesus to begin with, but it still works out. Its God that transforms us into His image and into His likeness more and more each day.

I have to agree about not forcing a 9 year old to read the bible. The best thing would probably to lead by example and do your own daily devotions in a place where your children can see it. If you try to force christianity upon them they may rebel against it. What kind of music is it that she is listening to? Is there a certain genre she likes--if so you could try giving her christian music in that genre. . .

and your in my prayer too Erin. i know there is so much God wants to do and say in our lives, we just have to listen to His still small voice. oh, there was a rap artists i was thinking of that is cool, ya go on youtube.com and type in this band name and let her hear it. Cross Movement - Livin' It
if you like, that group came to mind when i was reading one your posts. love you sis, and God bless you! keep pressing on! i pray for your family God will be with you in all you say and do as well, and that He will change you daily. i know for my own life i ask Christ to change me daily as well. somtimes i don't always like what i see in my self the things God has shown me, but when God showes us its in love, and does not condeme us. Thats what i love about My God in Heaven so much. HE cares for me truley. Not just today, but daily. Anyways be strong in Him!

Grace and Peace

The Power of a Praying Parent by Stormie Omartian is an excellent book that I really gleaned so much from. I don't have children old enough to feel confident in giving specific advice to you, but the power of prayer is so amazing and exciting! We are our children's covering... and our prayers go so far especially with them.
