In fact the under god part of the pledge wasnt even added until 1954 so almost 200 years before someone felt the 'chrisitian-ness' should be mentioned? ironic

You are correct, but I'm not sure who was saying that we were a Christian nation, so I'm not sure anyone's arguing otherwise.

Depends on where you're at. In the south I'm sure you'd find more racist republicans. Try West Virginia though. :)

It used to be the Democrats who were more racist, and the Republicans did more for blacks. This was before anyone on this board was born: Democrats were the southerners who were in favor of "keeping things the way they were" -- they liked their plantations and their slaves -- and states' rights. Republicans were the northerners who were in favor of industrial progress and federal expansion. Most KKK members were Democrats back then. Lincoln was a Republican. I'm not sure exactly when it flip-flopped. I know in my life-time, there were still a handful of Democrats in the south who were against civil rights in the 60s, a throw-back to earlier times. Today, you hear the anti-federal-government rhetoric from the Republicans (though once they're in office they're as bad or worse at expanding federal power). As for policies that favor minorities, Democrats absolutely win. I'm not saying that all Republicans are racist. I have heard the arguments for the Republican policies on minorities, and I know some people believe them to be true, but they aren't, and the Democratic policies are just better for minorities.

There are racist democrats and racist republicans. There are black democrats and black republicans.

The truth is that more minorities, women, and other oppressed populations favor Democrats, because the Democratic party favors them.

Another truth that a lot of "WASPs" don't realize is that the Democratic economic platform actually favors the rich, the whites, the majority populations as well. What's good for the poor in this country is good for everyone. The trickle-down theory of economics just doesn't work, and never has. Keynesian economics does work, and always has. This is the economic policy of the Democrats. So, while it may be true that poor, minorities, and other oppressed classes are just voting for Obama out of selfishness, because they want their hand-out, it just so happens that those policies are good for the 1% as well, and will benefit the whole nation.

I know. My husband is always bad-mouthing Democrats as if they haven't changed since 1860. He does it just to get under my skin.
