But not for higher pay.

It seems that the Chicago public schools are in terrible physical condition, many classrooms are without air conditioning. But because 90% of the student's families fall into the poverty level category, the funding for those schools is short of what is needed.

Rahm Immanuel who is the mayor of Chicago is stuck without enough money to help them. Needless to say the citizens of Chicago cant really afford new taxes to pay for the needed repairs either. So who suffers the most? The students suffer the most, but not because of what the teachers are doing. It is going to cost billions to get this school district up to the physical standards many other school districts merely assume is basic.

And of course if and when Obama is re-elected and if he gives Chicago some special money to help out guess what the republicans will be saying the next day? Well it wont be pleasant. Given that the republicans would insist on eliminating this school district and privatizing it, is there any private company willing to invest the money to bring them up to standards I doubt it.

They turned downa 16% raise also Chicago teachers are among the highest-paid in the nation. Their average salary is $76,000, according to the school district.

That is Illinois's problem, according to The Constitution. Although, I do know of a way to get them their share of 70 BILLION dollars, which is bound to help them out. Eliminate the bloated and unconstitutional U.S. Department of Education, which has only existed since 1980 and has shown no sort of national test score increase.

If we get rid of a few more obscenely unconstitutional Federal government programs like this, the states will have much more freedom and funds to do what they need to do.

Well Jim it is clear YOU dont like the federal department of education, there is no possibility that it is unconstitutional unless just being out of favor means it is unconstitutional.

This could be included in an infrastructure bill that would help make new jobs.

I would ignore that 76,000 a year teacher salary myself and them turning down 16% pay raise. I wonder why the school have no money and you say the student are not up to pair?

This is not just an Illinois situation. This is happening all over the country. Many school districts are going bankrupt as they struggle with juggling the finances. A lot of it stems from the way and government funding and regulation of school taxes are designed. Not to mention that some states are robbing from the rich school districts to give to the poor school districts, only to have the rich school districts become poor. In addition, much of the money goes for better methods of improving standardized testing, and not in updating schools or equipment. Now, some school districts are updating their campuses by adding new buildings, or remodeling. However others are creating new campuses that are state of the art, where all the money goes, and then never end up using them, because of lack of funds. Then the states create a whole lot of regulations that cost even more money. For example, if students don't pass State exams, students are then pulled out of extracurricular activities or forced to stay in after school, to improve on their test taking abilities, just so they can pass the exam the next time it's given. And some states tie their funding to the results of student tests. Teachers are not encouraged to teach outside the box, and instead to teach to the exam, which ends up dumbing down students, thus creating this vicious cycle.

It’s called indoctrination. Maybe if they would stop teaching kids to sing songs to Obama maybe they could learn something. Also it seems like Obama could have spent some of the 6 trillion dollar on schools, instead of on all these green companies that went bankrupt.
Way to go Obama – Great leadership skills --

We shouldn't be singing songs to any president. They did sing the praises of Bush as well.

FWIW $76k for someone with multiple Masters degrees is a small salary and Chicago Public schools have a plethora of teachers with multiple degrees. It puts them solidly in the middle class and Chicago is not exactly a cheap city to live in.

Besides, if America cant invest in the future for our kids why invest in anything else??? They are the most valuable asset this country has and some people just want them to lose out on their youth. It is sad.

You'll have to show me some evidence that it is constitutional, I don't take, "There's no possibility" as an answer. Also, "Making jobs" is not a federal duty either.

76 thousand for ten month's work is the equivalent of 91 thousand dollars a year, sounds fair to me. If it's not fair, teachers will leave, resulting in a shortage which will drive the salaries up. I love how the free market works.

As far as wanting children to lose out goes, what do you call a debt of 16 trillion dollars? Helping people is a good thing, but the Constitution put limits on the fed. government for a reason.

That salary is before benefits and turned down a 16% increase. Schools are falling apart, kids failing.

I told you this is deeper –
