Just like it says, Mayor Bloomberg just banned food donations in NYC. His reasoning is that the food's nutritiional value cannot be confirmed so it might be dangerous. This is the actual food that is going to the homeless shelters.

Here is a link to the article that just came out. Its also in Huffington Post and other news agencies so it is legit.

The real reason is likely political. If people depend on other sources for health and livelihood, they will not be dependent on the government. That means fewer votes.

According to that article it's only to government run facilities. This is probably a lesser of two evils situation.
If someone did get food poisoning or a health related sickness from food,they could file a lawsuit, and it could cost the city millions.

Yes people sue over this stuff in our nation.
