Tea Party Group Launches Racist ‘Obama Phone’ Ad

By Ian Millhiser on Oct 15, 2012 at 2:50 pm
Late last month, conservative media lit up with a video of an African-American woman excitedly praising President Barack Obama because he supposedly gave racial minorities in Cleveland free telephones. The video received prominent placement on the pro-Romney Drudge Report and spawned a popular #Obamaphone hashtag on Twitter. Although there is indeed a federal program which provides low-income people with free or reduced-cost cell phones, it began in 2008 under President George W. Bush. The idea of providing subsidized phone service to low-income individuals originated with a program started under President Ronald Reagan.
Now, the “Obamaphone” woman is the star of an ad sponsored by the Tea Party Victory Fund suggesting President Obama’s policies have “enslaved Americans“:

Of course they never bother to explain why someone with such a free phone is enslaved.

May I ask where you got your source of information on this? Please give a link of your source about who started free cell phones. Your comments Scream who you always vote for no matter the cost of it all. I believe we Christians are held accountable. If we vote for someone who supports aborition, gay right, etc etc etc. Yes they do matter to God even when we are voting.

Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you've fed him for a lifetime.

There's a reason why a great number of people who win the lottery, unexpectedly inherit a large sum, or receive large insurance settlements still end up in worse financial positions and/or filing bankruptcy. We can throw a lot of free tangible perks at low income earners, but it doesn't solve the root of the problem or really give them the means to grow. I've talked to, educated, and advised people on both ends of the spectrum. I would love to see some emphasis placed on teaching people about the value of saving and investing, and getting them excited about that. That would more of a difference than a thousand free phones ever could.

Oh my goodness. I am absolutely sick and tired of this so-called Christian behavior on this site. I don't care one bit how much you hate republicans or hate democrats, but it is seriously time for you all to grow up. Stop pointing the finger at one another and just realize it already...WE ALL SCREWED UP! We are humans. We screwed up yesterday, we will screw up today, and we will screw up tomorrow, but hey life goes on and you can't change the past.

I am not trying to be rude, but I am tired of all the "attack" threads on here. Can we not grow up and have an adult conversation? Some Christian example you set for the members younger than me. Also by attacking them back you become no better than them.

You know what I think. I think we should show equally stupid both parties can be....Big Bird anyone?

Both of these ads are stupid. I wish they could all grow up and not tear apart the others words to only use against them. No wonder kids turn out screwed up.

I disagree with this 1000%.

Investing in stocks is inherently risky because you are buying an equity stake into a company, as opposed to bonds where you provide a company or a government a loan and ideally you get your principal and interest back. Stocks are not appropriate for everyone, I will concede that, but for most investors, over a long term period a strategy that blends both stocks and bonds, and maybe incorporating other investment vehicles, helps them reach their financial targets. Stocks help your portfolio outplace inflation (ESPECIALLY in this extremely low interest rate environment) and help companies raise capital to grow. They serve their purpose, but you need to understand the risk you take, what your risk tolerance is, timeframe for your funds, where your stocks fit in terms of your entire financial picture, etc.

I would immediately vote against anyone who said to shut down the equities markets. No questions asked.

Agreed.

The whole thing about them riding on Romney's case about Big Bird...and making an ad out of it is stupid and immature.

It's so stupid it's kinda funny in my opinion. :p

But in regards to the other stuff you've said, I agree. I've seen people say such RUDE things about Republicans and Democrats alike. I've stopped because I should know better, and I'm sorry to those who I was rude to.

And we aren't gonna find a perfectly-honest, perfect-fitting President.

But what we CAN do is vote for who is the lesser of the two evils, and who you think will do a better job.

And YES the attack threads are kinda getting old...disliking someone doesn't mean "I gotta publicly bash him!!" (which I hope I'm not too guilty of.)

I'm alright with getting rid of big bird. If you have to save money, that's one place you can start cutting budgets without any potential harm. I say go for military spending next.

2011 sending...

We have to cut one of the big four, or increase taxes dramatically.

Cutting funding for PBS won't effect much. It's a small amount, but it's a small amount that wouldn't have to be cut from other places, such as say... Social Security.

I don't mean to sound dismissive, ofm. I've taken many finance courses. In fact, it was my major in college. I have several brokerage licenses and I am working on my CFA. I understand what I'm talking about and I deal with it firsthand on a daily basis. Stocks are not appropriate for everyone, but they are certainly appropriate for some people. If you were to stick all of a retiree's savings in a credit union, insured CD for the next 20 years you would lock in a loss right now, first because we have this low interest rate environment that will continue at least through 2014 due to fed security buybacks. Secondly the purchasing power of that CD will erode by 3 to 5 percent each year alone from inflation. This doesn't mean we build a 100% stock portfolio for a retiree by any means. Nor is it prudent to use a checking account as a college savings for a baby, just because its FDIC insured. Stocks have their place as investment vehicles for different situations, and it would be inappropriate to eliminate it. Every investor has different needs, we can't take away one tool from everyone if it doesn't work for you. Also, companies would have limited growth options if they weren't allowed to sell equity to shareholders, and that growth allows them to employ people and pay back those shareholders.

I'm passionate in my belief that we can't and shouldn't even try to eliminate risk through legislation, whether that translates to eliminating the markets or something as simple as taxing sodas. I know its too much to hope for a system where people are truly empowered to make their own decisions where government intervenes only to protect our rights, our basic freedoms, and public safety. People are fallible, yes, but true personal, spiritual, professional, family, and all kinds of growth happens when we educate people and allow them to draw their own conclusion. We do people a true disservice by just trying to take away all things 'bad for them' and sticking bandaids on problems without also shedding light on how to prevent it. I know I can't expect much from either Romney or Obama in what I ideally want from my government, but I can do what I can to inform myself and hopefully touch other peoples lives.

Why is there biting and cutting and division among us children of God? Flesh jealousy self-ambition produces every evil thing it opens a cesspool of societies filth, slinging it upon each other over political and or class war this has deceived into warring in the flesh, why is it because of love for this world and wanting to create your own safe haven on earth, beware and prepare to leave everything to work in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit then you will be wise and not foolish, wise virgins enter into the wedding feast, lay aside all filthiness and super fluidity of the world separate yourself and prepare for spiritual service and warfare do not entangle your souls attaching any of your soul to this world and so to be found worthy to serve without weights of wicked weakness' hindering or even cause you to be shut out knocking at the wedding feast door asking to enter in and hear Jesus say NO!
