Satan, who now tries to please you, Lest you timely warning take, When that word is past, will seize you, Plunge you in the burning lake: Think, poor sinner, Thy eternal all's at stake! The hymn suggests a belief that is common enough: that the devil is hell's chief superintendent and will spend eternity torturing sinners.

Those who are allied to Satan in this life will share his fate in the next. Satan won't be the tormentor. He will be crushed and all his power stripped from him. He will be as nothing, which is true right now. All he has is lies and deception. All will be exposed and Satan's downfall will be complete.

Satan will not be the superintendent the lake of fire, but will be one of its prisoners.

"And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, into which the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever."
