When you were in school (K-12)...what were you served for lunch? What was your favorite and least favorite item? Also, do you remember how much is cost or was it free? You can include breakfast, lunch, desserts, and snacks if you would like.

My favorite items were pizza and chicken burgers. Those were so good! For breakfast I liked the sausage biscuits and the pancake corndog. It looked like a corndog but it had a sausage wrapped in pancake. :love:
For dessert they usually had chocolate chip cookies in high school. In elementary, they had some orange popsicles with ice cream inside of them. I think they are called Creamsicles. They were both about 50 cents each.

My least favorite food item was the sloppy joes. They smelled so bad. I feel bad about it now...but I had to take a lunch tray and sometimes I would not touch any of the items in it! I ended up throwing away a lot of food. I wonder how much cafeteria food is wasted on picky kids.
Also, why was the orange juice so darn small? It was the best thing about breakfast and it was always so tiny! :unsure::unsure::mad: I always thought that instead of milk or chocolate milk for lunch...they should serve hmm I dunno oh yeah WATER!!!

In elementary and junior high everything (except the desserts and snacks) was free. I lived in a poor area I suppose. Look up the Rio Grande Valley...
When I moved to where I live now...regular lunch was $2 and if you wanted separate items like a chicken wrap you had to pay a la carte.
I went to school from the 90s to 2008 when I graduated hs...just to give you some context of the time. I'm curious as to how much lunch was in say...the 70s or 80s.

And those of you with children or teens...I would like to know how much it costs now if you don't mind. I just find all this really interesting.
Finally, you can post pics of the foods you used to like or dislike. The thread could be a little more fun that way....:p

I never ate lunch in high school.

Jr. High was:

Monday: Chicken sandwich or Cheeseburger, with your choice of fries or fruit cup.

Tuesday: Rib B Que sandwich or Cheeseburger, with your choice of fries or fruit cup.

Wednesday: Chicken Fried steak sandwich or cheeseburger, with your choice of fries or fruit cup.

Thursday: Corndog or cheeseburger, with your choice of fries or fruit cup.

Friday: Pizza or cheeseburger, with your choice of fries or fruit cup.

Lunch was about $2. All school lunches have been federally subsidized since before I was born. The actual cost back then was probably around $4.

My favorite in grade school was chicken a la king and if I remember correctly, parents paid the school around $2 a week. I also liked 'pig in a blanket' which was a mini hot dog wrapped in a biscuit-like bread. It's too bad your sloppy joes smelled funny. Ours smelled good and they were also one of my faves. :)

in early elementary school, i paid reduced price lunch, but in 4th grade, my mom stopped working, so i had free lunch.

the only food i remember really liking is the pizza. hamburger was my 2nd choice. i can't remember much else lol.

i ate breakfast at home.

What I want to know is, how in the hee haw does Tommy have his entire grade school lunch program menu memorized?

I can't remember what I ate this morning, let alone when I was in 6th grade. o_O

My favorite foods served to me were ravioli (daycare and kindergarten), pizza, and goulash. I love the ravioli and the goulash the most. There is a vegetarian goulash recipe that I mimic to this day because I love goulash so much. 🤤😍

Also, my stepfather who was raised in Ohio remembers the same goulash. The buildings were a little different in my childhood, but there were similar features to the schools he was raised in that I also grew up in.

Sorry Little Mermaid, this is an awesome topic but I'm trying really hard to remember anything I ate back then... Hmm. I think the tacos and pizza burgers were my favorite. Anything with chicken nuggets or patties was kind of scary, because chicken just doesn't seem like a food that should cut into shapes with cookie cutters (take that, dinosaur chicken nuggets!) :eek:

All I can really remember is my brother and his friends torturing all really cool Lunch Ladies. They were usually the moms of some of the kids or their friends at school, so the guys would always give them a hard time.

I just remember the boys would shouting things like, "What kind of slop are you feeding us today?" and, "Are you trying to pass that off as actual food?" and one very cool Lunch Lady would never miss a beat, always dishing it right back to them and threatening to serve them "special" lunches--straight out of the garbage can. :D

Ah. Those were the good old days, when even a cafeteria lunch didn't have to be politically correct.

Ah the rectangular pizza. That was the best thing about school lunches. I never figured out why it was in rectangles but it was delicious.

I usually brought my lunch from home because we was po folks and the lunch I brought tasted better than their junk anyway. But the pizza rectangles were great.

From grade one to grade six (primary school) we don't have a school cafeteria 😔 but there was a free food once a month... we called it bulgur but it looks like barley or oats it is brown in color...donated by the Americans.


But before we can eat bulgur our teacher will form us into groups and each group will bring sugar,firewood,big pot and coconut milk 😂


we (students) will cook it and when it is done we will line up holding our plates 😊 it was so good so tasty 😍 but we can't ask for another round 😂 I will only eat 2 spoons and the rest I'll bring home for my small siblings 😊

I wasn't fond of the piece of lettuce with a scoop of tuna salad on it, but I loved the schools version of Thanksgiving dinner.

I never ate at the school cafeteria growing up. Elementary and middle school I brown bagged and high school I just went home for lunch. The past few days I've been living out of the hospital cafeteria and I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food.

Some are good, some not so good. The hospital my wife was in six years ago after suffering from a stroke didn't have nearly as good food. I guess some of it has to do with the cook staff and some of it has to do with the chief nutritionist.

Or (depending on the menu grease level) they might be trying to get repeat business.

I and my family were visiting my sister in the hospital a few years ago and I got a bit peckish so I popped down to the cafeteria to get a bite to eat. I saw salad on the bar, but I also saw corn dogs, lasagna and a lot of other stuff I never expected to see in a hospital cafeteria.

What made it funny was, a few hours earlier on the way in I had noticed an advertisement on the lobby wall for their new Cardio Wing. I got the feeling all that greasy food was their effort to drum up business for said new Cardio Wing. My brain generated a scene of the person at the cash register handing somebody a bowl of lasagna and saying, "Here, enjoy it. See you soon!"

think when i started schools it was about a dollar for lunch by the time i left it had climbed to 2.50
the pizza wasnt bad. chilli was ok. lasagna was fine.
i do remember lots of eating alone but that is a whole other story

Actually, I rather enjoy hospital food too but fortunately haven't had the chance to eat any these last few years.
