This is my first attempt at a new thread but I would love to hear about anyone's experience with either hearing a service at their church, or participation in a bible study, discussion with a friend or private study that resulted in them viewing or understanding scripture in a new way.

Our church is undergoing an extensive study on Abraham. This past Sunday our Pastor walked us through Genesis 19 and initiated the discussion with admitting this chapter is extremely difficult for many if not most of Christians to wrap their head around. After listening to his notes to include the existing culture at that time I viewed both sisters for the first time regrettably in a non judgemental way to see another side of their plight. While their actions to save themeselves was sinful, I was able to have more compassion for their circumstance and understand Abrahams role also.

Thought it might be interesting to see if anyone had new or recent insights into other scriptures ?

I think most of John Lennox's "Talks" I wouldn't call them sermons or studies per say...but they've really given me a fresh open perspective on the gospel and Christianity as a whole. It has helped me answer some of the tough questions...and as Lennox puts it best just because a question is tough to answer does not mean it should be asked.

This puts into perspective the fact that I'm a biochemist and the perception that science and God are on opposite sides of the same coin really bothered me...Anywhoozles here's the talk link straight from youtube take a listen if you have time :) any and allof course. Let me know what you think!

John Lennox is a smart cat.

Three verses have stayed with me and come to mind on a regular basis:

"For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God." - This one always speaks to me when I see pride displayed in some way, shape, or form, whether from others (I'm looking at you, BDF) or myself.

"We glory in our tribulations, for we know that tribulations produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope." - Powerful verse.

And how Solomon summed up life has been hitting me lately. "All is vanity; a chasing after the wind; nothing is new under the sun."

I just heard something amazing on the radio! I got very emotional when the pastor finally explained it. Has to do with the old testament and the Daniel scripture about how many years.

Zero: can you provide a few more details or is it too personal?

Yes... if you take the number of years that the angel told Daniel it would take before the messiah showed up it was 483(?). He got that from the scripture which says "seven sevens" and "sixty-two sevens" you get 483 years and there is an actual document found on the day that scripture happened. It was during a certain King's reign and the actual document exists today and it is dated on a certain day in 445(?) BC... and if you add 483 years to the exact day of that document it comes to April 6, 32 AD! (using the old gregorian calendar) That is none other than the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey! It is Palm Sunday. And there is actual documentation from that day that proves that is the day Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. There is also a scripture where Jesus basically says "Oh Jerusalem, if only you knew what day this was..."

Anyway... I'd been goiing through a very rough time and really doubted if the God we worshipped truly existed and after hearing how these scriptures and dates lined up it made me realize that there was no way the old testament author could have predicted the exact day that Jesus was going to ride into Jerusalem and so that old testament scripture must have truly come from an angel of God.

Then the pastor went into how without biblical prophecy we would have no guarantee that God is true to his word...and that it was also assurance that He will fulfill everything He has promised to each of us through His word. This really hit me hard because I'd been going around scoffing at the promising scriptures that I used to believe in and was so sad because it seems totally impossible for them to ever come true for me.. so this was like God was talking directly to me.

I need to make a correction... the date when the 483 years starts is when Nehemiah begins rebuilding Jerusalem, and that is the date which is recorded on an actual document.
