1. How old were you when you met your spouse?

2. How long did you date before getting married?

3. How long have you been married?

4. What do you think it is that makes marriages successful and long-lasting?

Thought this would be an interesting idea for a thread. :)

1. How old were you when you met your spouse? ... 30 (my wife was 27, and neither of us had been married, or even engaged to be married)

2. How long did you date before getting married? ... 15 months

3. How long have you been married? ... 31 years (32 years this August)

4. What do you think it is that makes marriages successful and long-lasting? ... Letting my wife have total control of the TV remote :) ....Kidding ... well, sort of ;)

First and foremost, I believe that our marriage has been successful and lasted as long as it has because we built it on a solid foundation from the get-go. IOW, our marriage was built on Biblical principles (which includes principles that are directly concerned with marriage .. e.g. Ephesians 5:22-33, as well general principles, like the ones that you'll find in the verses/passages below in my signature line), with the Lord Jesus Christ at the center of it all.

Along with pastoral counseling, my wife and I also attended marriage conferences, like Cru's (Campus Crusade for Christ's), "Weekend to Remember" (both as an engaged couple, and then later as a married couple), and we have continued to do our best apply what we learned throughout our married life together.

God bless you!

~Deut
p.s. - all of principles you see below are extremely important to strengthening a marriage. I'll highlight the ones that have proven to be the most important to my marriage.

1 Corinthians 13
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails.

Why would you post this on the Singles forum...

Why would you post this on the Singles forum...
Because there are married people hanging out here, and because it's dangerous posting in the Family Forum. If the Family Forum was as chill as this forum, this thread probably would have been posted there. ;)

Why would you post this on the Singles forum...
So many potential good answers to that like:

What?! I posted this in the singles forum?
To ferret out the singles forum posters who aren't really single
Because singles forum is a dating site, right? Where else should you ask for marriage advice?
Because all the other forums are too contentious or scary.
Because this is where I post
To confuse people...

Etc.

But until the OP answers, let's say it's because we all know there's some married people that hang out here, and this is how we're going to ask them to earn their keep.

Still waiting for those pies. Somebody else can take the cake, but my eyes is on de pies.

Why don’t we make all the married people be hula hooping for two minutes before they are admitted here?

1. How old were you when you met your spouse? 31

2. How long did you date before getting married? Almost 18 months

3. How long have you been married? 3 years next week!

4. What do you think it is that makes marriages successful and long-lasting? Depending completely on the Lord, learning how to communicate and listen, prayer, letting go of our pride.

And reason we are so chill is because we are single and don't get marriage thrown in our face. LOL...

1. How old were you when you met your spouse?
40ish somethin... round there.

2. How long did you date before getting married?
5yrs, and that was because of complications with his job situation.

3. How long have you been married?
5yrs. coming up

4. What do you think it is that makes marriages successful and long-lasting?
Well obviously God has the biggest part to play, but that said, it's still up to us to make the marriage work. I think waiting until you are mature, whatever that age is for you helps. Realizing marriage is going to show you a side to yourself you've never seen, and neither have they. That's normal, it's called growing up. Communication is key, but most people have no idea how, it's a learning process. Putting the other persons needs before your own, even when you don't feel like it. And lastly, there are things that you can say that you can never take back, don't say those things. That's what I've learned in 5 yrs. ask me in another 5 and the answer may have changed.

Then go to the other threads and read what you like to read. The Op has posted what they wish to talk about.

1. first wife, 22 (divorce)--second wife, 47 (death) third wife (current), 59.

2. first wife, 3 ms.--second wife--2 ms.--third wife (current) 1 ms.

3. first wife, 6 yrs. 6 ms.--second wife, 11 yrs. 2 ms.--third wife (current) 5 yrs. 4ms.

4. Placing God at the center of the marriage. Realization that love is more than just an emotion but requires action involving sacrifice, discipline, and determination. In other words, total commitment. Marriage is not a 50-50 proposition, sometimes it's 60-40, 70-30, 80-20, 90-10. Regarding submission - this does not mean that your wife is your slave and must wait on your every whim and desire. My wife is my partner and best friend. A good husband places her needs above his wants. A husband that loves his wife does not even think about cheating on her let alone actually do it. Infidelity does irreparable harm. It destroys the marriage.
