I was reading about how young people used to marry in antiquity. It's really amazing by our cultural standards. But here in the U.S., the average age has always been older than that. For example, in 1890, when the U.S. Census Bureau started collecting marriage data, it was recorded that the average age of a first marriage for men was 26 years, and the average age of marriage for women was 22 years.

This is kind of weird given the age of consent laws in the U.S. during the 19th century which varied between 10 and 16, depending on the state and year. The age of consent was the age when it was determined that a boy or girl -- but most often, a girl -- was capable of consenting to any sexual activity. This does not mean minors often married, however. Although minors could, and still can, marry with parental consent in America, most did not marry so young so the average age of women marrying between 1800 and 1900 overall was 20-22 years of age and that of men was about 26 years of age.
Lot of people forget that back when a girl getting married at 12 or 13 was the norm. there was a high probability that same woman wouldn't make it much past 30 and many died in child birth. granted back then getting a small cut could result in misery and death. And once medicine advanced to where our life expectancy grew the need for getting married at 12 went away.

Also back in the day so to speak boys and girls were much more "mature" compared to kids today, tis was life when you reached a certain age you were expected to work and do lots of it.

Thank you guys! That makes me feel better. I think being socially awkward makes men repel from me haha. I'm very shy in real life.

Wisebeardman, yes we can totally go out! lol

What are you talking about?
Lot of guys, including myself, find socially awkward gals attractive.

No, it wasn't the norm. I shared information from census.gov that showed it was not the norm. I said (and you replied to this):

"For example, in 1890, when the U.S. Census Bureau started collecting marriage data, it was recorded that the average age of a first marriage for men was 26 years, and the average age of marriage for women was 22 years."

and

"Although minors could, and still can, marry with parental consent in America, most did not marry so young so the average age of women marrying between 1800 and 1900 overall was 20-22 years of age and that of men was about 26 years of age."

Where did that lead you to believe that 10 to 12 years of age was "the norm" for marrying???

I wonder if women find socially awkward men attractive. Or is it even Biblical for men to be that way?

true story: friends and i were at a youth ministry conference. and this guy went on the platform to give announcements, and he was all kinds of awkward. my friends said to me, "melita! there's your husband right there!" apparently.... according to them, i like socially awkward guys. and it's true. haha

Now when we say awkward, how do you relate to Sheldon Cooper? I guess he takes awkward and tears it into staple sized pieces of paper...

As is always the answer when people say 'i wonder what X gender thinks/feels/likes/dislikes/etc.. about the opposite gender', the answer is 'it depends on the person. Some women may find it cute. Others may see it as a turn off. There is no one answer.

And i don't really see it as a biblical issue to begin with. Some people naturally are less comfortable and capable in social settings than others. This isn't a biblical issue. Different people have different strengths and weaknesses and it's not really a matter of right or wrong.

I beg to differ. EVERYTHING is a matter of biblical right and wrong. Anyone who...

GO BACK FARTHER IN TIME. the world didn't just start in 1890 it didn't just start in 1800. you are totally missing out over 3,000+ years of history.

So don't tell me it wasn't the norm if you refuse to look at ALL the bloody history not only American history but history of the entire world.

Its garbage like this that makes Americans look bad, like nothing but America exists.
