I'm on very fast internet service - fiber actually.

But, youtube has been this horrendous blob of garbage for the last month, and it has been getting worse and worse. I tried the tricks that people have used (mainly blocking a range of IP addresses that are readily posted) and there was no luck.

I found, buried deep in a google discussion group (for double lols) how to figure out which CDN's (Content delivery network) servers youtube uses for my area through a combination of sorcery and black magic (not really). Then I found out that google uses 20 servers per CDN name. I found the IP's of those servers.

I was too lazy to to add individual IP addresses to my firewall, so I just went ahead and went with the smallest subnet mask I could that would include those servers (a /27 mask). I blocked two networks with /27 masks with outgoing traffic rules. Boo YAH.

I have forced google to use servers other than the 40 potential pieces of garbage they kept trying to stick me with.

Fast, flawless playback.

I feel so accomplished right now. I am now the most irresistable man on the block - at least temporarily. Sadly, there are no single women on my block. Still. I am radiating waves of awesome right now, and praise Jesus I can use youtube during high demand times.

Something like that.

Also, I made it happen, and I feel good having tracked down rogue servers.

I'm guessing, you're in either salt lake city, kansas city, or, a Texas town (Austin?), just from reading your post, Hisservantstriker.

No that's the really good (symmetric) gigabit fiber. I wish I had that. Actually a 10 gig metro ethernet connection sounds nice, although excessive.

This is a larger ISP, they do have some installs in Texas though. It starts with a V. I am on GPON though, so I'm still running at soil-yourself speeds.

Another plus is I can go back to my preferred DNS servers. I don't like using my ISP's DNS as they do redirects on bad urls and that's just annoying.

Yes, 10G is not 'it' yet, it will take a few more years for all of society to have it, but ,that will happen and will bring on an acceleration of societal ability. That will change the way we multi-task; productivity will get done at light speed and our order will improve so much that it will become........

....disorder.

The Lord leads. This is not a conspiracy theory either, this will be techology taking over our minds to the nth degree because of the speed at which we can access it.

But, that disorder, or, chaoas, is a year or two off, I see this as the 'entropy' of technology that I read about in a book awhile back and thought, 'How can technologies advance bring on a deterioration of society?' But I see it potentially happening now, through the internet airwaves speeding through massive quantitiies of information and orders will not all get met, causing orders not fulfilled, causing disorder.

'Course, this order is not of just the business productivity level, but, all levels, including social network order erupting into disorder.

But, yeah, I think, our speed-up of communications from Google Fiber will, ultimately, spin our society out of control; we will either handle the overloads of mass information (and you thought you had a lot of 'social' now) or we will short-circuit and, much like a massive power grid for a city blows out will the USA information highway CRASH! But, it's going to be quite a crash.......

I'm not being too weird in this prognostication, hopefully, wigging you all out, just this topic made this comment simply irresistible to hold back. :)

With Google Fiber, people can do more things than they can handle, hence, the 'unpredictability.' Society, as a whole, won't, or, let's say things easier on the ears, MAY NOT be able to handle this newly given power of communication and production and service and entertainment.

en·tro·py

ˈentrəpē/

noun

noun: entropy; plural noun: entropies; symbol: S

  • 1.
    Physics

a thermodynamic quantity representing the unavailability of a system's thermal energy for conversion into mechanical work, often interpreted as the degree of disorder or randomness in the system.
  • 2.
lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.

    ----------------
I don't say all this to scare us, the only fear that should be in us is of God, that is, a fear of not following Him in life, as He leads us all individually, by His Spirit and Word (Truth). But, this could be the chaos eruption that brings Jesus back to Earth from the sky, of which time we do not know the day nor the hour. But, one thing's certain, He's coming again. :)

So, get to know God now, for the future is not for us to know, but we can know assuredly that society is not doing any slowing down as we move forward in time, it's only moving faster and faster and faster.

I had the same problem with youtube videos suddenly playing like garbage on chrome about a month ago. I simply switched to mozilla firefox and that solved it. Apparently it is a widespread problem. Has something to do with chrome or flash or both. :p

What they don't know can't hurt them. I'm simply requesting content from a server in a region where their peering to my ISP isn't slow as molasses.

Rachel, do you understand how absolutely cool you are?
I think she does, but it bears repeating. This is a nice Sesame Street segway of saying "good job"

Also Green, I know what you're saying. The funny thing is I don't think it even requires ultra high speed internet. I think all it really takes is what we have now. Attention spans are at an all time low, and sinking by the day. We have more people who consume (thoughts ideas etc) than we have who actually produce them. There are less and less doctors and engineers and more and more lawyers etc.

10G is only the beginning, too. The speeds of the internet will rival television broadcast speeds in the near future. Think 40G+ , enough speed to run your entire watching life through your 'smart tv' set, smoothly, with no lag time whatsoever, running multiple apps/websites/games and watching multiple actual tv shows (if you want) on your tv .

It almost makes your brain explode, doesn't it

Now THAT will really be "fast, flawless, playback," Hisservantstriker :)

------------------------
The idea of entertainment everywhere will be all the more real, plus, 3D,too, will all be possible, with no lag (and no glasses) in the not too distant future, all possible because of Google Fiber lightspeed-fast internet bandwidth speeds.

That's just my take and thinking, looking into the future, and, to me, it tells us all, that Jesus is coming again soon. Like a thief in the night, from the sky. And, when He does come, it will be at light speed, that is, if a blink of the eye is THAT fast :)
