The Bible tells us that while Jesus was setting out on a journey, a young man ran up to Him, and fell on his knees before Him. Obviously, his actions caught Jesus' attention, but he intended to make a good impression, and proceeded to praise Jesus, by telling Him He was good. Then he came out with a question, which he had already determined the answer to. He asked what was required for him to have eternal life. Jesus saw right into the young man's heart, and with great love, carefully began peeling away at his misplaced self righteousness.

To begin with, He neutralized the man's compliment, showing He would not be impressed or persuaded by lip service that eluded true devotion from the heart. He began to quote the law of Moses, knowing full well that the young man had prided himself in knowing and adhering to the law since he was a boy. Jesus knew that this man was convinced that on the merit of his works, he would be granted entry into God's kingdom. That's where Jesus, full of compassion, said the words that shone a spot light on what was truly the object of this young man's devotion. Jesus told him he lacked one thing, and proceeded to tell him to sell all he had, give the money to the poor, then follow Him. He knew that if the man truly sought after God and loved Him with the devotion he alluded to have; he would be more than willing to forsake all he had to wholeheartedly follow after the Lord. Why? Because when you truly know and love the Lord, you understand that He is your portion in this life, and nothing compares to experiencing His love and walking in His ways. Today, know that by surrendering all you are, and all you have to the Lord, is that one thing that He is looking for, to releases His covenant blessing of provision and protection into your life, to the extent that you will never be able to contain the blessing He pours out on you.

For it is written, "Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing you lack: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me (Mark10:21)."
