Like you said, it's TAKING A TOLL ON YOU..I have a friend who watches Naruto so much that he now *Meditates* so he can improve his *smelling and visual abilities*. So you see how these things can tell a toll on somebody..

While it might not be a sin, it might be very addictive and dangerous :)

I don't know how spiritual you are but certain stuff can open doors in your life for demonic activity. How you dress is up to you. I personally have always liked the goth look. I am more careful these days about what I watch. I will say this though.....The fact you've asked the question may mean the holy spirit is bringing it to your attention. I'm not a goth myself. I used to be a skinhead before Jesus got a hold of me. Anyway it's your walk with God. I'd advise against watching vampire and werewolf movies though. Hope this has helped you.

Well I think it can be very dangerous as my minister's wife told the young people last year that a particular girl was so obsessed with Harry Potter that she started to drink blood ......yuck!

its more about ur heart,i dont care what u dress the thing is when was the last tym u bowed ur knees not just to pray but to adore God of his beauty.Being a christian is not just going to church or following some set of rules, its all about him, does it gloryfy him?
does things we do bring glory to his name?if it dont its all worthless..
However exposing urself in that degree may seem harmless now but hey every alcholoic started out wid a drink, satan is a lier and deceiver it is lyka roaring lion looking for someone he can devour.
Jesus said i am the way the truth and the life..
this is a walk of our life where we carry our cross daily and we might have to crucify things we love doing or do if that is no bringing glory to him.
he loves u much and i pray that he will set u up for his encounter in Jesus name

No it's not a sin, just don't overwhelm yourself with dark depressing things because I can speak for experience when I say that can make you annoying to be around. As long as you have a balance and know your limits, it's fine.

i dont believe we should like have a list of whats sin and whats not , theres a much better way to know what we are doing is being good for us or not and thats asking God Himself to reveal in ur heart , ask Father is it good for me? He's ur perfect Daddy and He wants ONLY what's good for His children. when u accepted Jesus as ur Savior His Spirit was deposited in ur heart , to be ur guide , then open ur bible and ask Him to reveal u there what u need to know. God bless u sis :)

I'm kind of confused how the girl drinking blood due to her Harry Potter infatuation and being Gothic are related lol

A) What does a Harry Potter fan have to do with being goth? If you must associate a label with that, usually it's us nerds that loved Harry Potter.

B) The only blood consumed in Harry Potter was unicorn blood in the first book, so unless she found an over abundance of unicorns that everyone else in the world overlooked I'd say you're probably thinking of Twilight. And even then you're not looking at the outcome of liking a book series a little too much, you're looking at the actions of an insane or at least really stupid person.

and finally C) You can't let fanatics make you decide how safe it is to love something. Not to bring up a touchy point, but need I point out how many insane "Christians" do stupid things that give the religion a bad name? Westboro Baptist anyone? (And even though actual Christians will know the difference, a lot of non-believers base their views on Christians off of people like that).

You can't surround yourself with "dark and gothic things" and surround yourself with God also. It's a contradiction. I really have no doubt there. And horror films are extremely ungodly.

Well there is a list of laws that we go by. Probably the most well known list is the 10 commandments. Remember Jesus came not to abolish the law but to fulfill the law. God lists many laws in the bible that we should abide by. One of them being Witchcraft. The bible says not to love the world or the things that are in the world. "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever"

Now what is the lust of the eyes? And what is the pride of life? These days the pride of life is what many people try to use to justify doing certain things that the bible says is an abomination, like homosexuality which is clearly an abomination to the Lord. "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."

Now the Lust of the eyes "And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:"

The word ''offend'' used here is a word that is also transliterated as 'causes you to sin'

How can your eye cause you to sin? Because it matters what you allow yourself to see.

"The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!"

Now we know that witchcraft is clearly a sin "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king."

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like"

Now witchcraft we know is a sin. Is it a sin to allow yourself to be entertained by it? The eye is the light of your soul.

"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil."

"Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless."

Now I know that many people have a deaf ear to what I have to say but God has revealed this to me because one day I decided to go to God for the answer and stop relying on my own understanding of what was right.

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil."

i know Joshua, that's what i told her to do too , to ask God and He will reveal to her guided by the Spirit. when i said "we shouldnt have a list of what's sin and whats not " i had in mind things like "harry potter" , "tight clothes" , "horror movies " , "drinking wine" , "secular music" and many other questions that come up along our lives , things that people have different views on , so i thought best to encourage her to exercise listening from God Himself and understand Scripture so she can build discernment herself .u know, changes happen inside out , changes that last ,so i thought if i answered "yes it's a sin" i supposed she would get rid of the gothic materials because she was told to do it , not that the Spirit convinced her that's not wholesome , so i imagined soon there would be another question and the change would be happening "outside in".

but i totally agree with the contents of ur post :)

As much as I personally find some of the Gothic stuff to be odd, I can't say I know of any scriptural reason to say all of it is bad. As long as the dark clothing is worn because its dark clothing, and not because you're pursueing an evil look; what's the problem?

Every subculture has it's bad stuff.

edit:
stumbling block thing might be a consideration too, I can think of a few examples.

If I may offer a thought, one should examine the roots why they want to live a certain way. Whether it's being Goth, emo, jock or whatever and examine who they are glorifying through that lifestyle. Even those who are hardcore-Goths need Jesus and I believe they'd be more receptive to a goth right? But it's when we don't use these things for God that they become a distraction. If you are living for God and he is calling you to live like this, that's great! If you are unsure, pray. Pray that God will reveal His will to you and be patient. He makes things happen in His time. But in the meantime just give it all to Him. Everything that there is just give it over to Him and He will take care of the rest. I honestly believe we can trust God's plan for our lives bc he can see the entire picture whereas we can only see a small glimpse of what there is to see.

Well, in my opinion... Being a Goth is like having a great fashion sense, But i'll discourage you having yourself printed all over with tattoos and piercings because God doesn't like that.

I don't think it is a sin. The guys who sacked Rome and inhabited Spain were not all bad.

My question is simply what are the redeeming qualities of embracing so much darkness? What is the attraction to it? Do you intend to grow out of it? If so, why start?

Hiyas,
I havent really read the replies even though I should've (its 3am here...just can be bothered)
So I'm just gonna give you what I think

Okay, here's the thing, I'm a bit like you, I love gothic literature and gothic architecture (absolutely beautiful) and I enjoy dressing the gothic part and painting my nails black and yada yada. I've been told that black associates with evil by many people, but then I thought, that is a man made association with no justification and the lord is the God of both day and night, pitch black is still God :p (if you get my drift).
I think its okay to be gothic, I mean I did some research into it and the gothic movement focuses on the victorian era, then it moved onto gothic genre, etc etc. Many people conform to the stereotypical belief that Goths want to be near the dead, and want to be vampires and suck your blood, and what not. Gothic is not satanic in anyway.

So go ahead, be goth :) I'm all the way with ya girl!

Man so many people, even thinking they are being gothic, aren't really even being gothic. The gothic i remember growing up is something COMPLETELY different then what i see going on today. The bittersweet thing i have seen in today's culture is people are trying to be something, and fail horribly at, but create their own kind of sub-genre of the genre they are trying to be.

"emo" for instance...

Everytime i hear someone refer to someone else as being an "emo," it's what most people i know consider just being a scene kid. Have the tight clothed fashion, but they are vegan's who never cut or write suicidal poems and such. Besides all of the emo kids in the late 90's- early 2000's were all just products of the 80's new wave punk era.

So Goth's? Heavy eyeliner and listen to metal? All the Goth's that i remember from growing up walked around with rat's in their trench coats, doing small animal sacrifices, and slashing designs in their arms with razors. Pretty extreme for the "goth's" i see walking around today.

I believe it all has to do with the heart attitude. I love horror movie; love them. I grew up on George romero, boris karlof, and lon chaney. I love the social undertones that exsist in them, i enjoy the make up and special effects. Definatly my shin-dig as far as movies go (who else is mad stoked about the 2nd half of season 2 for "The Walking Dead"?!?!?!?). Do i feel this has harmed my relationship with God? Absolutlely not.

If you make sure that you are doing things for the right reason. Pray your heart is were it need's to be, and your action's and outward appearnce should change accordingly.
