The message of the gospel is pure and sufficient, just as the Word of God presents it. Anything added or subtracted from it will bring dangerous error to that truth. Paul saw first hand how the superstitions and inbred, old beliefs had crept into and contaminated the faith of believers. He cautioned Timothy to protect, at all costs, the truth he had learnt from the Word of God, and not allow himself to be swayed away from it.

The cultures and traditions the believers had come from, lured them further and further away from the simple truth, causing the Word to have very little effect in their lives. Their careless words that contradicted the Word of God, acted like seeds, planting false mindsets and producing incorrect beliefs. As children of God, we must continuously be on our guard to test every teaching and doctrine we hear, against the truth of God's Word. We have been given the Holy Spirit, Who has promised to teach us and lead us into all truth. That's why we must be sure to pay close attention to His voice in our hearts. And at all times, we must be carefully aware of the conversations we keep and watch the words we speak, so we don't fall into the same trap of deception. Praise God for His Word of truth and the indwelling Holy Spirit, and always be ready to answer, from the truth of God's Word, why you believe what you do.
