A young woman in the Lutheran church we have been visiting had her confirmation today. The Pastor, when the elders went to pray over her, said that they would be laying their hands on her. He explained that they had not done so for a long time, but that he now recognized that there was power in it. As he turned to pray over her, he said again 'I don't know why there is power in it but there is'.

So, my friends, I ask you... why is there power in the laying on of hands during prayer?

Yes He is... but what is it about the physical act of laying on the hands that enables that?

Doesnt say, just that it happens that way, people were healed through extra ordinary ways also through things brought from Paul's body, its like that which comes through one set apart and holy unto God, and through whom he choses.

Theres various examples, even Paul had hands laid upon him for his sight and to be filled with the Holy Ghost, shows who the Lord has sent, who are His, thats how I perceive the same.

There are two Scriptural occasions for laying on of hands:

1) Ordination of a pastor or deacon; or commissioning of a missionary

2) Prayer for healing.

When someone is confirmed as a member of a congregation; because of Mt 28:19-20, that person is at the same time commissioned to evangelize.

When a person prays for salvation hands are laid on for the same reason

By virtue of the indwelling Holy Spirit Jesus indwells every believer.

When we lay on hands, Christ in us is touching the recipient. The Power is in Christ NOT IN US.

It appears to be of the priniciples but its rare to even catch those preached without confusion.

Heb 6:1-2 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection;
not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works,
and of faith toward God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms,
and of laying on of hands,
and of resurrection of the dead,
and of eternal judgment.

Hebrews 6:3 And this will we do, if God permit.

Even back then Simon Magus could see for himself the Holy Ghost was given this way

Acts 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, (he was perverse though)

Acts 8:19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

Just before this

Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

Acts 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

We see this with Saul/Paul with Ananias (who the Lord sent)

Acts 9:10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.

Acts 9:11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,

Acts 9:12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.

Acts 9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

Acts 9:18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

And here as well

Acts 19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

Acts 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

Acts 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

And here as well....

1 Ti 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

1 Ti 4:15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

1 Ti 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Just a few examples that can be found

Marc you are right, the power is in Christ not us. And we know there are occasions where we are called upon to lay hands. But what is it in the act (and not the occasion) that causes the Spirit to flow?

I would have loved to see Yeshua heal people. Just to stand in the crowd and look at the Master at work.

Here shows one of the things Jesus had done in this manner (laying on of hands here)

Luke 13:11 And,
behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

Luke 13:12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.

Luke 13:13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

It was because God was with Jesus who was anointed with the Holy Ghost

Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Who said,

John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

And again said

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Same had to come to Saul (even through the laying on of hands) through whom Jesus sent (Ananias)

Acts 9:17.... Who says to him... Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

And so through Paul now, being anointed with the Holy Ghost and power did the same as Jesus who God anointed with the same

Acts 19:11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

Acts 19:12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; (Acts 16:18, & 19:12) they shall speak with new tongues; (1 Cr 14:18)

Mark 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; (Acts 28:5) they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.(Acts 14:9, 20:10, Acts 28:8-9)

Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Hmm...I don't know but last night I had a migraine and the medicine I took wasn't working at all. So I laid my hand on my head and started praying in the name of Jesus that my headache would leave..I noticed that instead of my headache totally disappearing,my headache became less and less painful the more I prayed...a little off the subject but thought I would bring that up..

We serve an awesome God. When you feel like this remember praying to YAHWEH-RAPHA: "The Lord Who Heals".

I think when we pray the presence and power of God is with us and when we lay hands, the power passes through the hands.

The Laying On Of Hands
The Laying on of Hands is the 5[SUP]th[/SUP] item listed in the first principles of the oracles of God in Heb 6v1,2.

The teaching of Scripture is that spirit is a divine substance which can come direct from Heaven, or be imparted by physical contact with one in whom the Spirit of God is. As such a substance it is capable of having a physical effect upon the material substance of which the world is composed; so that a house can be shaken by it, or a new eye formed.

It is also clear that spirit is subdivided into different types, even as light is composed of different colours. So that, when Jacob was blessing the sons of Joseph, it mattered which hand was placed upon which boy, since the blessings were different, and came through different hands. (Gen 48v13-19.) So also the "divisions of spirit" of Heb 2v4 refer to this difference; each separate kind of spirit carrying in itself the blessing that was to be given.

The Laying on of Hands, i.e., physical contact—even of the whole body in the raising of the dead—was the usual way whereby spirit was imparted, though at times the unction was so great that even without actual contact those near a spirit-filled person would receive it. Even inanimate objects could be so impregnated with spirit as to convey it to a person at a distance. (Acts 8v18, 9v12-17, 5v15, 19v12, 20v10, Matt 14v36, Mark 5v27-30, II Kings 13v21, I Kings 17v21, II Kings 4v34-35.)

The following are typical of the blessings imparted by the Laying on of Hands:

The Baptism in the Spirit and the Healing of the Body. (Acts 9v17, 8v18, 19:6, 28v8, Mark 16v18.)

The spirit of Wisdom. (Deut 34v9.)

An unspecified gift. (I Tim 4v14, II Tim 1v6.)

A future career. (Gen 48v13-19.)

The impartation of spirit through the Laying on of Hands means that the blesser is the poorer and the blessed the richer for the transaction (Luke 5v17, 6v12-19, 8v46), and therefore the blesser needs a continual refilling if he is to continue imparting. Hence, the Lord's habit of retiring for prayer in the midst of such ministry, e.g., Lk. 5v16 (Greek—"kept retiring in the desert places and praying").

In all these matters we have the example of our Lord, who laid hands not only upon the sick (Mark 1v40-41), but also upon the babies (Mark 10v13-16).

While it is true and scriptural that spiritual blessing is imparted through the Laying on of Hands, it is equally true that God could and did dispense with any such medium when it so pleased Him, e.g., Acts 1v2-4, 10v44-45, John 4v50, Matt 8v8-13, John 11v43.

Since spirit in all its varieties can therefore be imparted through physical contact, it is clear that the Laying on of Hands for such a gracious purpose is indeed one of the Foundation Truths, to be not only understood, but also put into practice. Here again, as in everything pertaining to God, the safeguard against misuse is an honest heart.

By the act of the Laying of Hands you cannot impart what is not in you; and if you attempt to do so the result will be failure and disappointment. Matt 7v22 makes it clear that many will claim to have served God in the spirit who never knew Him. It is for this reason that care is necessary in all things pertaining to the spirit life; just as Israel needed to be watchful in Canaan (Joshua 8v7,9,14). It was because of the dangers that awaited them in Canaan that the people refused to go over. Many Christians have been kept from a full Pentecostal experience by the same motive. They are unable to trust the Lord to see them through the undoubted dangers, and prefer to play for safety. (Num 13 & 14.)

Yahweh Shalom

That passage brought to mind a few others:

Numbers 11:16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
Numbers 11:17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

Numbers 27:18 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;
Numbers 27:19 And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.
Numbers 27:20 And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
Numbers 27:22 And Moses did as the LORD commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:
Numbers 27:23 And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

Through the laying on of Hands. God heals people, God imparts Gift, The Baptism in the Holy Ghost is through the Laying of of Hands, Also There is Blessing that Comes through the Laying on of Hands.

Also the receiving or imparting of the Holy Spirit.
