It most certainly is/was but as Francis Schaeffer pointed out western man lost site of the universalness of creation and started compartmentalizing his universe with no coherent unifying principle and a a result Theology/Religion was also pidgeon holed into it's own compartment and thus no longer touched every aspect of life.

Yes, the development of higher education at Paris, Oxford, Cambridge,

Harvard, Yale and Princeton was followed by state universities

copying and altering our concepts .
