Is numerology biblical?

So this is really bugging me here. I heard of numerology a long time ago the belief that numbers have spiritual meaning to them like the number three and seven with God six with satan and so on and how apparently God will be trying to send message using numbers that seem to appear in the same sequence a lot.

I didn't want anything to do with this so I stayed far away from it and yet I still for some reason keep seeing these things.

The ones I saw on almost a daily basis are 911 888 and recently 666. I don't just see them on the clock I see them everywhere and I always try to ignore it I don't want to be looking for it so I try to simply ignore it but I still for some reason keep seeing these numbers. I don't even know if numerology is even biblical

Numerology is biblical in the sense that it is either evil at the most if it be witchcraft or vanity at the least if it be but hollow lies.

I am apparently not the only one to see them especially 911 it is a very common one ppl see these days, even before the 911 event 911 was the emergancy phone number and I don't try to see these things either. If God is trying to send me a message with numbers then that's fine I am just afraid to believe it and I wouldn't know how to find out what each number represents biblically anyways like 8 is because 888 is one I see alot too

math is an universal language, for sure. and God also created it, and in many parts of scripture, it seems pretty clear that numbers are used symbolically.
my opinion is that we as humans can take that way farther than we should. "numerology" is a pretty broad label - there is some truth, and there is some error, and some running away chasing wind in it too.

i get the idea behind "common core" but the method of teaching it is misguided IMHO. it's trying to teach a way of thinking about algebra that i'm not convinced can really be 'taught' by rote; it's a conceptual thing that i'm sure will butchered by a lot of people who simply don't think in this way, and that adds to the bad rap it's getting. maybe it was a good idea in some sense on the drawing board but it's all gone wrong
still, 1 + 1 = 2, even in 'common core.'

but that's using a certain measure, in a certain geometry - a linear one.
there are other situations and other measures where 1 + 1 ≠ 2 . . .
for example i think we are familiar with one where 1 + 1 + 1 = 1 bro

There is a lot of symbolism in Biblical numbers and even in the letter/numbers,
but people take it, and make it what they want,
using the lack of general knowledge about the topic to invent their own system, which those of us who know little about the number system of Hebrew, fall right into if we are not using discernment.

here's another example where 1 + 1 ≠ 2 - in a Euclidean plane.

move 1 unit in the vertical direction, then move 1 unit horizontally. your displacement is not 2, it's the square root of 2 - the hypotenuse of a pythagorean triangle.

to me, this is illustrating how important it is to clearly define the space we work in and the measure we work with. the distance we travel in that example is not the same as the distance we are from where we started from. our Faith is the same way in some respects - through Christ we have been translated very, very far from our sin, though the distance we have actually moved away from them may be small by another measure. this isn't one question with two different answers; it's two measures: God's measure, versus our own.
we tend to think of things according to the measure of our flesh - and that leads to all this 'works righteousness' nonsense.
but God has measured us by Spirit - to our advantage - so that our righteousness is by faith. this can lead to what are apparently contradictions if we look at the our state without comprehending the 'spiritual geometry' and measure it with a carnal measure that's inappropriate for that geometry.
now, we need to realize who we are in Christ and bring those carnal measures into alignment with the spiritual one: we need to put away all unrighteousness (by carnal measure) in us, because (by spiritual measure) we are already declared righteous. we are more than what we are measured to be, if we measure with the wrong scale!

i'm writing this because dcon inspired a thought in me that may be relevant to considering "numerology" in a larger sense: that the measure used, and the space considered are extremely important. we could get led into confusion pretty quickly by 'numerology' that uses the wrong measure, and the wrong space - especially when we're not normally used to thinking in terms of numbers and measures and spaces. people into this sort of thing will just throw all kinds of numbers at you without pausing to define any kind of axiomatic logical structure - so you're "wowed" by how many times the number 3 shows up or something, but is there any meaning to it? or is it just a rabbit hole & madness without any method?
i can't just toss out the whole concept of numbers expressing meaning - but we've got to have discernment, and recognize somehow what's nonsense and what's not. too easy to get carried away otherwise

The Lord uses all kinds of numbers in scripture, even the book of Numbers. Think about the rotations of the planets and the times and seasons which are like clock work. Look at all the measurements the Lord gave in the design of the Ark to Noah, in the tabernacle design to Moses, the measurements of the Temple to Ezekiel, even John was told to measure the Temple in Revelation. I believe Jesus was a Carpenter for a sign of this, and what do Carpenters do? They measure and build.

There is repeating pattern in many of the numbers in scripture if one has the eyes to see it. Here's one I thought was cool in the times mentioned in Daniel and Revelation of 1260+1290+1335=3885 divided by 5=777

1 is the loneliest number.
Adding it to 0 just makes it depressed.

and ignore those who memorize math systems(cheat formulas) without understanding why they work, when they work.
PEMDAS? FOIL?
Why don't they always get the right answer? because they are logically flawed, and only useful for teaching, not for real life math.

Here is my logical proof:
God is never wrong, and nothing that comes from Him is false.
Modern US mathematic teaching standards of 'order of operations' often get false answers.
Therefore, it is ungodly to teach PEMDAS and FOIL.

and that's why numerology is unbiblical... at least in America.

As dcon mentioned, each letter in the Hebrew and Greek alphabets has a numerical value attached to them and when the numerical values of the letters which make up Jesus' name in Greek are added together the sum total is 888. Is there significance to that? Personally, I believe that there is. Certain letters of the Roman alphabet have numerical values attached to them as well and we know them as Roman numerals. Regarding the number of his name that we read about in the book of Revelation or 666, the early church fathers, not that I always agree with them, believed that when the numeric values of the individual letters which comprise his name are added together that the sum total will be 666.

That said, numerology or gematria could become a dangerous practice if one tries to make it apply everywhere.

In ancient times when the use of number was just beginning. three was the furthest men could count. Thus in Egypt the word for three also meant 'everything'. The ancient Sumerians, who developed mathematics from basic beginnings to a very high level, also began at the level of 'three'. Thu the word for 'man' was also used for 'one', the word for 'woman' was also used for 'two' and the word for three also meant 'everything else'. That is why three was regularly seen as the number of completeness.

Then they developed the ability to count on the fingers of one hand, thus counting to 'five', six was 5 +1, seven was 5 + 2. That was at that stage the ultimate of counting. Thus 'seven' became the number of divine perfection. In spite of the rapid expansion of their mathematics in their religious myths for a long while they only ever use the numbers three and seven because they were seen as significant as indicating completeness and divine perfection. This usage carried on among the Hebrews. (Abraham came from Sumer).

The Bible unquestionably sees significance in the numbers 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 40, 1000, (and multiples of the same) among others.

Something of this growth in the use of numbers comes out in our own numbers. eleven = eleph un (0ne over) and twelve = two eleph (two over) looking back to when men used their fingers for counting and when they got to ten could manage two more numbers and that was it.
