Unfortunately I've seen many homeless people with this sort of mentality.
In the UK there are centres where homeless people can go and get genuine help.
For example in the city where I live, there is a combined clinic / social services place
right in the city centre. Also a Christian run part funded by donations part by the council,
where homeless men can go and learn to live again. It's not just a bed for one night it's
a proper place to stay. Also there are many places for homeless women.
These places have rules like no drinking, drugs etc. They also offer the
help both medical and physiological to get clean from these addictions.
The people who are genuine and want to change go into these programmes, get off the
streets and turn their lives around - all they have to do is say YES.
But there are others who as soon as they realise they have to change and there are rules
to adhere to, they walk out. You can only help someone who wants help and is willing
to help themselves.
I know of a person who regularly sleeps rough and he is getting old now, he has
been on the streets for years and is an alcoholic. Loads of people tried to help him, but
each time he went back to his old ways saying he preferred living on the streets.
There is loads of help for the long term homeless like this.
The people who probably have it the hardest are ones who lose their home due to
getting into financial trouble. They seem to get the least help and end up sofa
surfing at different family and friends. They are still homeless but there is less help
available just because they are not off their head on drugs and drink. But no one
seems to bother about them.
