I think a cult is more like a group that removes all critical-thinking from its followers. A cult would emphasize that they are 100% correct and theres no other way. They will keep you in a bubble for as long as possible. Persuade you not to look outside of them for anything.
A cult doesn't follow the Word of God or encourage you to study it.
OK then it would appear that heresy does not make a cult because heresy may allow for others to be saved outside the core group.

Heretical beliefs must be part of a cult but there appears to be more that is required. Does a cult need heresy and apostasy?

Would unbelief in the promises of God make some one in a cult?

Would it make them a charismatic? Or a Pentecostal? Or a Baptist?

Maybe we need another thread where we can try to come to some consensus on the definition of a cult, generally, then come back and revisit this topic?

Heresy is important, which I did not factor into my definition. I was thinking more of groups with orthodox beliefs deviating only at the point of charismata. But again, that is the topic of this thread!

Hmm..........

.......reading through the comments, I tend to agree with you......it seems that ONE definition being put forward here is:

"Anyone who does not believe as I do, or worship as I do.........they are a cult"

Let me just mention one name Todd Bentley and NAR

So many believed this was the start of a worldwide revival, the big thing.
Problem is it was not.

That is the meaning of hoping for the wrong thing.

Sorry.............

I have to strongly disagree with that one. Unless you have specific, documented evidence that identifies a "cult" in "every denomination." Well, then you might have something, but if you do not have that evidence..............

It is a well documented fact that the established religious church of Martin Luther's day wanted to kill him and considered him and his followers a cult and of course in complete heresy.....I mean they only had 1100 years of "established truth" to go by when they accused Luther and all others that believed like he did as being heretics....go figure...

To me a cult is one that denies Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and that His blood redeemed us. That He was God manifested in the flesh as the Son of God - died for us and rose again from the dead.

I have seen just as much spiritual manipulation being done in conservative denominations as I have in charismatic/Pentecostal ones. They just manifest differently but are from the same root. It's a work of the flesh.

I also understand the "need" for "our denomination" that we belong to not be classified as having manipulation in it's midst. The works of the flesh are manifested in all people in all denominations.

I do not need to be "educated" in what they believe, because I was one of them most of my life. But thanks for your worry.
did you read where I stated I am not...let me add, I never have been?

I am well aware of the excess...why add thanks for my worry? is that some kind of off hand sarcasm because I asked if you read the entire article?

it's surprising sometimes, how much people might find they actually do NOT know while stating they need no further education

blah blah.
you open a provocative thread, then police it if it doesn't go your way.

I said - I hate THE PRACTICE since IT is demonic.
don't you hate what the Lord hates? I would hope so.

if you don't like dialogue with me, don't engage.
I have no problem with discussing anything, including things I feel strongly about.
so how about less whining and more true exploration of your topic?

I don't care how many people are charismatics.....it's false and flesh and sinful nonsense.
ok dude...listen up

I didn't start the thread

you came in with guns and opinion blazing...maybe close the object beneath your nose and open your eyes

Westboro Baptist Church, Topeka KS.

A cult for sure, but definitely not Baptist.
