Matthew 25:1-13 King James Version (KJV)

25 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

[SUP]
2 [/SUP]And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

[SUP]
3 [/SUP]They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

[SUP]
4 [/SUP]But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

[SUP]
5 [/SUP]While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

[SUP]
6 [/SUP]And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

[SUP]
7 [/SUP]Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

[SUP]
8[/SUP]And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
[SUP]

9 [/SUP]But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

[SUP]
10 [/SUP]And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

[SUP]
11 [/SUP]Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

[SUP]
12 [/SUP]But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

[SUP]
13 [/SUP]Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Five of the virgins were religious, they thought they were saved. Millions presently are in the Church, but not in Christ.

My question is about vs. 3 & 4, how does the Believer receive a constant flow of the Spirit within our hearts and lives daily so we will remain wise and not become foolish?

They took no oil that were foolish.

That doesn't mean 'their oil needs renewed' or 'they didn't have quite enough' or any other similar pseudo religious doublespeak. It means they didn't have any.

One drop of the Lord's blood is sufficient for me for all eternity: He leads me to still waters and satisfies my soul :)

What can be the oil?

External resources (like Bible, preaching, internet, books...) or internal sources (new heart, the Holy Spirit) or both?

Lets imagine that tommorow we end up on an isolated island for the rest of our lifes. Or in a communist prison for life.
Would we have enough oil to shine?

A well spring of life spewing forth from a believer...JESUS is the source....many need to get that through their head!

A constant flow of the Spirit within our hearts and lives, can only come about and maintained, by one's Faith in Christ and the Cross (Romans 8:1-2, 11).

Either you are operating under "Grace" or the "Law." There must be "oil in the lamp (extra oil for refilling's daily - Matthew 25:1-13)" What caused the lamps to go out in the time of Samuel as a boy, is causing the lamps to go out presently (1 Sam. 3:1-9). The Bible teaches us that many Christians retained the outward show and form of Faith but neglected the true inward life of Faith. The "Law" is a curse.

Remember, Jesus said out of the 10 Virgins (Believers), 5 were wise and 5 became foolish (once a Believer)...their oil was gone.

IMO oil in the vessels symbolizes spiritual life, and oil in the lamps symbolizes natural life. When the foolish Christians wake up from death at their resurrections they realize that they do not have spiritual life even though they thought they did. So what they thought they had is taken away from them.

Therefore consider how you listen, for whoever has, to him [more] will be given, and whoever does not have, even what he thinks [that he] has will be taken away from him.” Luke 8:18

While I agree theologically, I am not sure if it fits the parable.

Jesus would be both husband and oil in lamps of those who wait for Him. Its possible, but I am not sure if its the right view of the parable.

my question is about vv. 9-10

where does one go to 'buy' salvation? where's the market stand that sells the Spirit?
((as if it could be so!))

. . . i think the answer probably has a lot to do with Proverbs 1:28-29, Psalm 18:41, Psalm 66:18, Isaiah 1:14-15, Isaiah 55:6 and John 7:34 . . . ?

no..

He says they were foolish. not that they became foolish. the parable says they took no oil not that they had some but lost it, or had some but not enough. they had lamps, and they even trimmed their lamps, but they had no oil. a dry wick will burn for a little bit then smolder.

no oil means no oil

maybe Jimmy Swaggart ((or whoever)) said they 'used to be saved but somehow used up the Spirit & wiggled out of the Shepherds arms too late to go back to the spiritual gas station' -- but that's not what Jesus says.

[SUP]9 [/SUP]But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves (proclaims the truth that spiritual energy cannot be derived from others).
[SUP]
10 [/SUP]And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut
(there will come a time, when it's too late; today is the day...(Heb. 3:15).

the wise virgins knew that they couldn't keep someone else's lamp burning with their own oil. that's significant.
does it mean the oil isn't transferable from person to person? it has to be acquired from the source? :)

We pay for it with our time and efforts.

Buy the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. Proverbs 23:23
