I've noticed that people that have the gift of tounges talk about God alot more and want to know a lot more about him, but do you almost or totally give up things you like because of it. Basically, I just want to know if I'll still like to watch/play anime/video games once I get the gift of tounges.

I believe the miraculous sign gifts have ceased. In any case, if God has given you a gift, what would it profit you or the church to worry about which selfish desires you would lose after attaining this gift?

Of course you would still like that stuff.

I would go with the Spirit does not impart all gifts to all people. Your gift will not neccessarily ever be the gift of tongues.

If your games aren't bad why would you need to stop them? If you spend way more time on games than on God then you have a problem.
The gift of tongues is God praying for you. the word says we don't know how to pray well enough but God does. The gift edifies you and the church. Why anyone would not want that is up to them. You know sometimes people get taught something wrong. It's so simple to look at the word. Paul is saying it wouldn't make sense for me to get up her and give a sermon is tongues. I have to get up here and give a sermon in a language you understand. He was not discounting praying in tongues.

I am still trying to figure out what purpose speaking in tongues, in the modern church, serves. Paul said not to speak in tongues unless there is someone there to interpret what you are saying.

that is the purpose. If the Spirit has a message to speak an interpreter will be there to share the interpretation.

I should clarify my last statement. I believe Paul says we are not to speak in tongues IN CHURCH unless there is someone there to interpret what we have said.

In the Bible, it was necessary to speak in tongues because there were people about who spoke in different languages than the disciples. That wouldn’t normally be true in the modern church. What is the purpose of speaking in tongues today?
