I heard this very recently, and I don't think it's true at all. I haven't seen any Scripture provided with it.

The background as to why I asked the question is this: I noticed a post about something that may have involved a demon by a friend on Facebook. I said something regarding rebuking it in Jesus' name or just praising God, and her sister said that a demon couldn't be in the house because the house was blessed a while ago.

Where does that come from? Is there ANY truth to it? I mean, I know demons are pretty much everywhere, but is there any Scriptural basis for that? (The friend who posted is Christian, and I'm pretty sure her sister is too.)

Well Catholics traditionally have a home blessed with holy water by a priest when they first move in; in order to repel demons. Some Protestants do something similar where they'll bring over the pastor to pray in each room of the house for God to bless the house (the plead the blood of Jesus folks do this a lot). But blessing things is thoroughly scriptural if you'll look through the OT (the blessing for children, the congregation at the temple, the sacrificial lamb, etc), but all the blessed items in the world can't help you if you don't have faith in God.

This is a good way
1 Samuel 16:23
(23) And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Calling things superstitions when it involves the Christian religion is a slippery slope to tread on. The Reformers dismissed much under the label of superstition and this continued until now we have entire Protestant denominations dismissing hell, demons, and even miracles under the label of superstition.

To BLESS is to SPEAK forth good things about something. A Blessing is a spoken thing. But just because someone has spoken something good over a person, house, or whatever, does not mean that a demon cannot be present. Demons have legal rights to be where they are. If there is sin in a person's life, they can be there; if there are objects that have been cursed (prayed over in submission to demonic gods, pagan gods) they can be there. If there has been violence at the site, they can be there, etc.

Where does that come from? very bad teaching Is there ANY truth to it?No I mean, I know demons are pretty much everywhere, but is there any Scriptural basis for that?Nope, see above (The friend who posted is Christian, and I'm pretty sure her sister is too.)
Just because she is a believer and follower of Christ does not mean that she did not get some erroneous teachings! Hold every thought captive TO THE WORD OF GOD. If what you hear does not line up with scripture, trash it. And if you are uncertain, put it on the back shelf until you can ask and learn. People perish for LACK OF KNOWLEDGE and this refers to Scriptural knowledge and spiritual understanding.

Then exorcise the house and the ground upon which it sits. Then if the problem persists it's the person and not the abode.

I really dont think that putting my trust in scripture and putting away
superstitious traditions is going to make me disbelieve other scriptures.

Slippery slope? thats a strange type of logic.

Depends on what your defining as superstitions. Switching off a light 3 times every time? Knocking on wood? or some other sort.

I told her sister that "I didn't want to get into it, at least not here..." I said not here because Bible arguments on Facebook don't give God a good picture (I've had a bad experience in the past about it :p). But I wanted to ask her some questions about why she thought that. I knew what you were talking about, and I wanted to tell her that, actually. Thank you, MaggieMye!

Definition of SUPERSTITION

1
a : a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation
b : an irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, nature, or God resulting from superstition
2
: a notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary

that is what i mean....the scripture i quoted relieved you from the presumption
that i must not believe in the spiritual or demonic realm. Leaving only the unbiblical
practices as the superstition i was alluding to.

What acts then do you consider superstitious?

Some people look at Deuteronomy 11:19-23 Write his word on your door post to keep evil from entering, teach your children to walk in his ways . Children can not understand something and bring something into your house. You walk in his ways so you don't bring something into your house. If you do those things he will drive out your enemies before you.
19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.
22 If you carefully observe all these commands I am giving you to follow—to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him and to hold fast to him— 23 then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and stronger than you. 24 Every place where you set your foot will be yours:

For a house? for instance. All acts whatsoever. Prayer if the persons overactive mind is buggin em.
But for a house? Where in scripture are we instructed for that?

Dueteronomy 11:19-23 is the scripture for using a mesuza. It is a scroll hand written in hebrew that you hang outside your door. It is mainly used by jews and some christians. For blessing items, you don't need every reference to know jesus blessed food. The bible mentions anointing with oil many times. The common idea of blessing a house is from movies. Where a catholic priest come in with robe and waiving cross around while sprinkling holy water. This image gives people the wrong impression. Truly anointing your house is about casting out evil spirits in the name of jesus and applying the blood of jesus to keep the destoyer out. At the first passover the jews were instructed by moses to put lambs blood on door posts with an olive branch. Basically the idea is the same. You are applying the blood of jesus with olive oil. I would not recommend using jesus name if you don't believe in it and the power of it. The process of anointing your house is start at door or even property line. Repent of sin to purify yourself. Pray over olive oil asking god to bless it to his purpose of anointing. Put some on door posts while speaking out load casting evil spirts out in the name of jesus, speak the blood of jesus on every door, window and wall and in jesus name allow nothing unpure to cross this threshold. Do this at door then drop of oil in corner of every room in house. After this playing praise and worship music at low volume all day can purify the atmosphere. If you don't believe in it, don't do it. It may cause more harm than good if you don't have the faith level to know or believe the authority jesus gave us through his name and blood. Jesus said in his name we can cast out demins and do all things he could. He was an example for us. I only have internet on my phone and this post is long enough without adding full reference. I have had numerous dark spirits in every house. They appeared in pictures. We got pic of skeleton coming out of ceiling. Saw physical manifestations. Heard sounds and saw things move. I was saved for a few years before starting to grow spiritually. I learned about anointing your house by a dvd teching from perry stone called purging your house. It gives all scripture reference. When I started doing this, we have nit had so much as a uncomfortable feeling. It may not be for everyone but it does work. Its not about the ritual, its about jesus and the authority he gives those who have faith in him. I also incorperated the mesuza when anointing my home. It is a visual sign to those who enter that this family serves the lord. It can also be a witnessing tool to people coming to your door who ask about it.

You can pray over your house, Ive done this before, though I never used special water or plant to sprinkle it. I did it using my bible and the name of Jesus.
But because Im a sinner I know I also have to check my heart regularly. Im not going to rely on one prayer or two over my house to protect it from demonism, I have to check my relationship with God. Letting demons into your home means that you've given Satan a foothold somewhere in your life. It happens through the sin we do either in thought or action or by sinning by ommision (knowing right but not doing it) and not repenting of it but it can also occur from what you or people inadvertently bring into your home, eg things that encourage witchcraft like ouija boards, astrology stuff, tarot cards, dream catchers, dodgy "spiritual" literature, stuff like that. Big strongholds can also be things like long term unforgiveness, bitterness, hosting and teaching false doctrine in your home. Anything that is "bad" fruit (opposite to the fruit of the Spirit).

Also, I'll state one more thing. CS Lewis said we can either believe Satan and spiritual warfare doesn't exist or we can go into hyperdrive believing there is satanic input in EVERYTHING when its not necessarily him but our own sinful nature. So pray over your home and family, grow in your relationship with God, put on the full armor of the Spirit but don't go all demon obsessed ok?

Blessings

Kyouken, here's a few things,

1) scripture says we have the authority to rebuke the devil (that includes demons)
2) scripture also tells us that demons try to return from where they were kicked out. (that tells us they are relentless, and try to come back and take back what they lost)
3) Scripture also says that 7 brothers thought they would excercise or talk to a demon and got themselves stripped naked and running from the house all cut up (that tells us that if we don't know what we are doing, then we could end up hurt pretty bad.)

My wife and I had a friend who had a roommate who had a demon attached to her, her apt. was 80 degrees, but her room was cold enough to see our breath.(this is real, no joke) My wife and I took this girls wouji board and destroyed it, prayed over her and ordered the demon to leave her and her room once and for all. We had the faith as far as believing we had the authority in Yeshua's name to do this. And no sooner than when we finished rebuking it, the room temp. caught up to the rest of the apt. But here's the problem, we didn't have the spiritual maturity at that time to know what we were dealing with. Short story, over the next few months my wife and I were attacked by satan so bad, that we lost everything we had, and we didn't understand what was going on and didn't have the spiritual maturity to battle it. Casting out demons, excersising them etc. is something to take very, very serious. Yeshua is more powerful, and through Him we have the power to do things, but it is by no means something that we should ever take lightly, or we may end up running from our house naked and cut up. One thing I know that is very affective when it comes to the house. Taking oil, pray over it to be blessed by YHVH, and go around and annoint doors (especially all doors leading in & out of the house), annoint all windows and walk along the perimeter of the house and pour oil around it, praying for YHVH's protection over the house the whole time. I have found that to be the most successful out of everthing, because you're leaving it in YHVH's hands. People are too arrogant, and too quick to want to try and use authority they don't understand. Whatever you do or your friend, pray for protection over your lives, health, jobs, spiritual lives etc. don't miss anything. Pray, pray, pray. Shalom

You are entering the ...experience zone. How? do you gain this authority? what does col 1:13 mean?
how do you know you lost everything because of a satanic attack? Was it faith, oil, or superstition that
by the way also brings peace as well as terror.

Yes there is a very real spirit world. But i would want to use scripture to help someone
not just experiencial ponderings, that have no means to test. Join yourself to a multimillion
dollar book industry teaching folks to deal with the spirit world...all without biblical base.
God did not leave us to guesswork and our own devises. The truth is in the scriptures.

Perhaps I should have stated what I believed about it, but whatever :p
To say thank you wouldn't accurately portray what I'd like to, but thank and you are the words I can only seem to utter.
Thank you, all.
