"Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. " Psalm 23:5

Sheep can get their head caught in briers. They can die trying to get untangled. Also, there are flies that torment the sheep by laying eggs in their nostrils. The flies turn into worms. They torment the sheep to the degree that they will beat their heads against a rock. The sheep sometimes die from beating their heads against the rocks trying to get rid of these tormenting flies.
Additionally, their ears and eyes are also susceptible to tormenting insects.
Therefore, the shepherd anoints their entire head with oil. The oil forms a barrier of protection against the evil that tries to destroy the sheep. Then there is peace.

Sheep are not the brightest animals. They fall over and can't get up. They're stuck in the thicket and can't get out. They bawl and bawl for the shepherd. We're likened to them. Not so bright we are, until we accept we need the shepherd to anoint us with oil, break out the briars. turn us upright and stop the bawling. Thoughts? -student

Great sermon. :) We were at a golf course once and it was their season for biting flies. Unbelievable. It felt like chunks of skin were being taken out of our arms. Poor sheep. Thank God for their Shepherd.
