are you referring to your secondary avatar in your home page ??

you are limited by pixel size
it is possible to upload an image from your PC or to
download an image off the net but it can't be overly big in pixels

graphics tend to be more user friendly but if you have a photo
of yourself you may have to do some cropping and reduce the size

I'm referring to the overall background on my profile pic. I just have a black color, while I see others with cool pics and designs.

Go to your profile page and click Customize My Profile

An overlay page will appear that allows you to enter urls
for backgrounds in the active and inactive modules.

Make sure to save your changes :)

It's called a profile pic, not a secondary avatar.
