Death means a number of things in scripture, not
always a physical death. So Paul in this case is
talking about following Jesus in His sufferings
and His death and Resurrection. In other places
death means death to the Spirit. So some of
these means we've abandoned Christ and gone a
way that has taken us away from Him. This death
however can be overcome by coming to Christ for
forgiveness and reconciliation. In this case, our
standing in Him is reinstated. We need to be able
to recognize that death and come to Him or else
we are really distancing ourselves from Him, a very
dangerous thing to do.
