This is probably the most stupid thread.... but it is for a valid reason....

Can you visualise math?

My dad let me know what an idiot I am because to me 1/8 is little... If I have a pie cut into 8 pieces I still have a lot of pie. But he insisted I am an idiot. 1/8th of his cubs games he cannot watch, on the Major League Baseball app because of silly contract with cable. Maybe I'm not so inept...lol But I realised I can not judge how fare a year is (like road sings), yet I know 3ft equal a yard.

Is this a woman thing or maybe I am just inept....

Your since speaks loudly! Maybe I should have said practical application. I seen only 1 piece of a pie missing my dad saw about 20 base ball games he can not watch. I can do mathematical equations but do not grasp the practical application of them....

In my book if you cut a pie in 8 pieces, you still have the
whole pie, it’s just easier to eat! :D

For college I am currently studying for a test on mathematics and their applications. Honestly, it's the best book I've ever gone through! In my head I know math. I bluffed my way through high school algebra with good grades. In fact, I've gotten good grades in mathematics ever since the day when I was 15 and mum found me in tears over a math book and she looked into my eyes and told me: "stop trying to understand it, sweetheart. Memorize the procedure and get out there and pass that test." That was the first and only time she's ever told me that, since we've always considered knowing and retaining the material as more important than any test score. Except for me, in math :p. That's why this book on applications has been super good. It is the closest I've come to enjoying math since kindergarten, and I actually understand what they're trying to tell me, and how it works!

Math is different for different people. It seems like you either love it or you hate it. Yes, since taking this course, I've gotten so I can actually visualize math! No, it is not natural for me.

More of a connecting the wrong visualizes to the situation. Yup, 1/8th of a pie is a nice hunk of pie. I'm not going to complain if I get an 8th of a pie. BUT Would you buy a pie if an 8th were missing? Would you buy a book if an 8th was missing? Would you not complain if you were enjoying the book for a bit, before you discovered an 8th was missing?

Baseball games are like good books. You don't want to miss a thing.

Maybe more empathy needed rather than better math skills?

I understood that.... You should be a math professor! More importantly the scope of my visualization broadened.

Math always has a new dress on...

if you were blessed with a parent who really cared, then, you're 'home-free', IF you do your part...

lol...lol....

My dad is in his 80's about ten years a go I told him I prayed G-d would let him preach to 1000's before he died.... He responded, "Oh that is sweet hunny, but what I really want you to pray for is G-d will let me see the Cubs win the World Series before I die".... Sad, but true story, and down right funny.... I was afraid, for a minunant when they finally did win (and I watched it with my dad) he would die.... Thank G-d he is still "kicking"....!!!!!

Dad is born and raised in Chicago....

I think what you mean is proportions. 1/8 by itself is pretty meaningless. If your Dad explained to you that there are a total of 8 games and he misses 1/8, well, he only misses one game. No big deal. The 1/8 becomes more pertinent when he explains that 1/8 of the games means he misses 20 games out of the total. With the pie, the 1/8 becomes more understandeable when you know how large the whole is. If the pie is big, 1/8 is a nice slice. If the pie is small, 1/8 is hardly a bite.

Fractions are pointless without knowing how large the “whole” is.

I did, when I was a child, maybe a little like the child in the movie 'Little Man Tate.'. I would look at problems and see the answer, and because of this, I got an F- in algebra-which was why I chose to drop out of high school.
