Would anybody have ideas / good experiences at a volunteering group / organization that they would recommend?

I'm mainly interested in giving back to the community by alleviating poverty, helping lonely people, etc. - I've been doing a lot of searching online but cannot decide on which would be a good group/organization because there are so many to choose from. I have been at Bridges homeless shelter in Cambridge before.

Also I live in Canada so any places/organizations available within Canada are most helpful.

Thank you :)

Best thing I'd advise is first figure out what exactly you want to do. Then pick a place and try it. If it doesn't suit you, try another. It's not as if it's a waste of time of you don't care for one, you're still helping.

Start with which kind of people do you like -- tykes, retired, teens, middle-aged? Then what do you like to do? Cook, talk, play game, counsel, housework? Pick your strengths. (For age and skill set.)

Then go from there.

-- If you like old people and like to talk, visit someone in a retirement home. (If you like military people, a veterans retirement home.)

-- If your good at housework/labor, find a disability advocacy place, and ask them who needs help.

-- If you like kids, a rec center or read at a library every week. Really gutsy and like the toddlers, babysitting in a church.

-- If you love to cook, make meals for the homeless. Not gutsy enough to visit the homeless, than make meals for Meals of Wheels or Aid for Friends.

It really depends on who you like and what you like to do. Because honestly? I should have known before I even tried it, prison ministry was not for me.

oh my, our Father never ceases to give all of us opportunities to 'help-others'!
but, we must always listen to Him first and foremost, else we can put what WE THINK'
that we should be doing, instead of listening to Him...

for us personally, soon after our conversion '82', He made it obvious that we were to give our
new found Love and Energy to a local county 'nursing-home' and that for about 10yrs...
it was all good in some ways, but in others the learning was very hard to take, of what we saw
and how limited we were in their system:
also, Jesus led us to volunteer in the Senior and Special Olympics...
great learning experiences all the way around, plus it built our Faith and confidence in Him,.
that we were in obedience to Him and learning how to leave our old, worldly, 'wills' behind us...

now He has us doing some, for many, deep and scary outreaches that will come with
growing and learning how to Trust and Rely even more on our Saviour to get us through,
no matter the circumstances - it's a privledge and honor for us to see how He has led us
to grow and mature as we age -
and to be able to make a difference for Him and those whom He Loves...

just a share of what may lay ahead for many as they are called and chosen to serve their Holy-Master...
