In spite of what we've been taught in the "authorized school system", the New World had a great deal of traffic with Europe, Africa, and Asia before Columbus.
There is no reason for Atlantis to have sunk in the Atlantic (both have the same root words) when it can more easily be explained by it being the Americas.
(Regarding this sinking, the ancient city by Lake Poopo does seem to have been destroyed by an earthquake that emptied the three rings of water that surrounded the city.)
