Let All Things Be Done Decently And In Order,
Paul is talking to us about church decorum and what
decent conduct should be. Although the church is a
much different entity than it once was, it should still
breathe unity rather than dysfunction, It seems as if
there was a lot of disorder and a large variety of who
is right or wrong. Probably for different reasons that
is the case even now, although maybe not in church
directly but in venues other than in church. Paul is
calling for unity rather than disunity and humility over
pride. Scripture discussion is healthy but continual
argument is not. We are to seek and to find, to learn
and to live and live in Christ and do all things for His
glory.

Orthodoxy defines the problem as not being one of conflicting doctrine but of many souls claiming to have a prophetic message and wanting to speak in tongues. The meeting of the saints had become one of each trying to out do the other in their gift of tongues and prophecy. Paul is writing this letter as a corrective document not one of congratulations and praise.

For the cause of Christ

The start of the NBA season and the team, and the people, are excited that this could be the year that they take the championship and win the title, and if they do win, they rejoice, for out of all the teams that competed against each they beat them all, they are the winners, they are number one.

I wonder if that is the attitude of some people that they would rather not have unity, but disunity, so they can say out of all the denominations that claim truth we have the truth, we are the winners, we are number one, and they rejoice over that.

Paul was writing specifically about the gathering of the saints. The guidelines for that venue may not be appropriate for every venue; such as this one. We must therefore rely on general principles of interaction: respect, deferral, honoring each other above ourselves. In this forum we can't interrupt each other, and can't speak (ie. write) in tongues.

God (via Paul) would like all Christians to speak in tongues.

1 Cor 14:
5) I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

We are also told to covet to prophesy.

1 Cor 14:
39) Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

The meeting of the saints had become one of each trying to out do the other in their gift of tongues and prophecy.

Tongues and prophesy are not gifts, but manifestations of the gift of the Holy Spirit.

That's right. Did he tell them to not seek to prophesy or to speak in tongues? No, he did not. He told them the correct way to operate the manifestations in the church.

God is not pleased with disorderly conduct, particularly when Christians gather to worship. Within the Corinthian church (and by extension within many churches today) worship has been replaced by disorderly conduct, and worldly concepts, which focus on entertainment rather than edification. Even many sermons and music are more geared to entertainment and false teaching, rather than expounding Bible truth and spiritual praises to God.

Paul noted in his letter to the Corinthians that if a stranger walked into a church meeting where everyone was speaking in tongues at the same time, he would consider these people mad. Something to think about by those who practice tongues.

If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? (1 Cor 14:23)

Disorder and confusion do not bring glory to God. Therefore there are many lessons to be learned from the OT regarding orderly worship, when we focus on the tabernacle and the temple. The dress and deportment of the priests is also relevant.
