After Jesus was brought to Caiaphas's chamber, the night before His crucifixion, the Bible tells us He received a fierce beating from the temple guards. Then Caiaphas with the scribes and elders, gave Him a sound beating of another kind. They blindfolded Jesus and took their time abusing Him by striking His face, spitting on Him and hurling horrible, blasphemous insults at Him. They unleashed their anger and hatred on Him with no verbal restraint. And Jesus, Who was completely innocent and without sin, refused to retaliate. We may never be treated as cruelly as this, but there may be occasions where we are falsely accused, or receive the blunt end of someone's angry, abusive outburst of hatred, even though we did nothing to deserve it. Should you ever find yourself in a predicament where people are emotionally abusing or taking advantage of you, call out to God to strengthen you! He will give you the wisdom to know when to speak or when to hold your peace and remain silent.
Whatever you do, don't let the devil have the upper hand by giving into the temptation to fight back with angry, hateful words. Be certain to guard your mouth and allow the Holy Spirit to dictate your emotions. Jesus is the perfect Example of how He yielded to God's love, even while being blasphemed and cursed. He never fought back or allowed Himself to be dragged into a war of words. Peter reminds us that this is part of our calling, to show the character of Christ even in the most difficult situations. Let's learn to yield to the Holy Spirit and overcome the temptation to sin.
