We integrate it with all that is revealed about baptisms.

1. Since "one Spirit" is mentioned in this context, there are TWO BAPTISMS connected with one Spirit. The "one baptism" mentioned here is when Christ baptizes (immerses) believers WITH the Holy Ghost through the gift of the Holy Spirit -- "He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit" (Mt 3:11).

2. But that is not where it ends. After believers receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit baptizes (immerses) them into the Body of Christ. So this is the baptism BY the Holy Spirit.

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (1 Cor 12:13)

3. Then we have Christian baptism by immersion in water (Mt 28:19). (The baptism of John the Baptizer was temporary and only for Israel, and that is what he implied in Mt 3:11).

4. And the baptism with *fire* could refer to either one of two things: (1) the tongues of fire which came upon the disciples on the day of Pentecost or (2) the persecutions and martyrdoms of Christians in the furnace of afflictions.

5. What Pentecostals and Charismatics call "the baptism IN the Holy Spirit" (with speaking in tongues) is not based upon Bible truth, since not all will speak in tongues.

N...,

This occurred not under the era of the new covenant, under sacrifice for forgiveness, but under the old covenant.

Oh boy, here we go..........

Water baptism is a symbolic act done in obedience to Christ telling us to be water baptized, which serves as a witness to the Church and the world that we have become disciples of Christ. It is symbolic of the "one baptism" spoken of in Scripture. The baptism spoken of by Paul to the Ephesians is a spiritual baptism that can not be seen be either the Church or the world. This is the reason we are water baptized. I also believe it fulfills the Scripture where Christ said:

Matthew 10:32) Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

(my thoughts only)
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Repentance=death just as Christ die we must die to self Baptism just as Christ was buried we to must be buried into death. And a step farther just as Christ had to rise up and be glorified so He must be glorified in us. His holy spirit. in us.

John the Baptist was still under the Old Covenant. But we are speaking about what is under the New Covenant. John was pointing to Christ and how He would baptize believers with the Holy Spirit after Pentecost.

Study scriptures;....water baptism is to acknowledge Christ ...to the world and all peoples...as our Savior and to join Him fully cleansed of our repented sins....just as we repent to G-d as our Creator.

I don't know what bible you are following but, the KJV tells me it is clearly required.
I know...thief on the cross. Mistake...he was not under the New Covenant of water baptism ...yet, he was still under the Old Covenant. Chris had not died yet. The NT was not in to effect...yet.
Are you KJV only? Water baptism is not required for salvation under the Old Covenant or the New Covenant. In Matthew 27:39-43, we see that those who passed by, along with the chief priests scribes and elders blashemed, mocked and shook their heads at Jesus and EVEN THE ROBBERS WHO WERE CRUCIFIED WITH HIM REVILED HIM WITH THE SAME THING. I certainly don't see being crucified as a thief, blasheming, mocking and shaking your head at Jesus as being the fruit of repentance/faith. Yet, moments later, we see that the thief had a "change of mind" (repentance) placed his faith in Christ for salvation and was saved (Luke 23:40-43). *Of course, he died upon the cross the same day of his conversion before having the opportunity to be water baptized.

Before the cross - "..baptism of repentance for the remission of sins" (Mark 1:4; Luke 3:3).

After the cross - "Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38). I'm hearing the same message. Baptism is to be done in the name of Jesus Christ "in regards to/on the basis of" the forgiveness of sins received upon repentance prior to and under the New Covenant.

Faith in Jesus Christ "implied in genuine repentance" (rather than water baptism) brings the remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:47; Acts 2:38; 3:19; 5:31; 10:43-47; 11:17,18; 15:8,9; 16:31; 26:18). *Perfect Harmony.*

Water baptism what does it mean?
As our Lord and saviour has done we also present ourselves as a living sacrifice.
In the old testament all sacrifices were cleaned after carfull inspection.
When we give ourself over to Jesus and trust him as our saviour he presents us to the father. John17 -6-26. As the high preist that he is.
Jesus has taken our place on the alter as the lamb of God giving us new life
John being surprised at Jesus request to be baptized and further asking Jesus if he was the one or should he look for another shows that even John did not know how the lamb of God was to take away the sins of the world.

I check my dictionary but repentance doesn't mean death...

Analyze your interpretation.......The thief was not under the rules of baptism of the new testament/new covenant....He did not have to be baptized.
You will have to find another assist.

Before the cross - "..baptism of repentance for the remission of sins" (Mark 1:4; Luke 3:3).....

Anyone care to explain why Roman soldiers would be present while John was baptizing in the wilderness beyond Jordan? (See John 1:28)

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them,....." Luke 3:14

Of course it is written in the scriptures because it isn't relevant to anything anyway, right? But of course Jesus did say of the Roman Commander, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. (See Matthew 8:10)

But regarding the baptism of John in the wilderness beyond Jordan, if John believed Jesus was the lamb of God sent to take away the sins of the world then why is it written that afterwards John sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus if he was?

19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

It is only natural after Christ's notoriety had spread throughout Judah that some gentiles would become curious. Also, all people during all ages have wondered and sought to know God......

How would Jesus have any notoriety since he didn't begin his ministry until after his baptism.

It is evident that a Roman soldier would have already known that the Son of God who sat upon the throne of God and ruled over the nations was, especially if one believes the NT scriptures;
.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Divi Filius Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. Luke 2:1

Which does bring up he question, why did Paul appeal to Augustus instead of Jesus?

Sorry, John's fame had spread...........There were Romans later who also yearned to hear more of the Gospel they had heard of.....remember the centurion who said he was unworthy that Jesus should enter under his roof to heal his son? There were most likely many others for JOh's foretelling and preparing the way for Jesus and for Christ's teaching.

Types of baptism
Baptism of repentance: Is for Nation of Israel only; under the Gospel of the Kingdom message:
Baptism of repentance was John the Baptist ministry for the Nation of Israel only. A call of Repentance from breaking covenant with the LORD Jeremiah 31:32. Water baptism here is Jewish purification/cleasning doctrine preparing themselves for the soon coming prophesied & promised Messiah.

John the Baptist proclaimed:
Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptise you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptise you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire:
(NOTE: John Baptises with water. The coming Messiah will Baptise with the Holy Spirit & with fire)

Matt 3:11 & Luke 3:16: The baptism into Christ's body via the Holy Spirit. Is a covenant of spiritual circumcision. Done by Christ & ONLY Christ. And done ""Spiritually"" without hands & without water.

Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision "made without hands", in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
(NOTE: A circumcision "made without hands")

NOTE: Translators Capitalized Spirit in the beginning & end of the 1 Cor 12:13 signifying deity/Godhead.

1 Cor 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
(NOTE: Baptised by ONE SPIRIT the HOLY SPIRIT. Into one body, The Body of Christ. And no water is used)

Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism (SPIRITUAL no water is used here)

Deut 30:6 (A) The LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart

Rom 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter (NOTE: Believers are indewlt by Christ with/by the Holy Spirit. A SPIRITUAL circumcision. Done without hands & without water)

The moment you accept/trust place your faith in Christ's redemptive sin atoning sacrifice. Found in the death (sins wage paid in full), burial & resurrection (God's stamp, payment received) of God's Son, Jesus the Christ.

Eph 1:3 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed ""ye were sealed with that holy Spirit''" of promise
(NOTE: The gospel of your salvation is: You heard & believed/trusted. In the Redemptive Sin Atoning Sacrifice. Found in the death, burial & resurrection of Jesus the Christ. And were immediately Sealed with God's Holy Spirit)

14 Which is the down payment of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession
(NOTE: God's Holy Spirit dwelling within us is God's sealed down payment on our redemption. And soon Christ will redeem what he purchased on the cross)

Ephesians 4:30 Grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
(NOTE: Believers are SEALED with/by God's Holy Spirit. It's a guard & a pomise that soon Christ will come for us)

New Testament Baptism in water:
Water baptism is an emblem of the true spiritual circumcision/baptism. Water baptism is an outwardly public profession of dying to sin, being buried (when we go under) and of being raised together with Christ in new spiritual resurrection life.

John 12:24 Verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground & die, "it abideth alone" "but if it die" "it bringeth forth much fruit"
(NOTE: One must die to self in order to bring forth good Godly friut. Faith & faith alone in Christ's sin redemptive payment is the only requirement for salvation)

The baptism of Fire:
Fire is a symbol of judgment. See Isaiah 5:24, Isaiah 66:24. John the Baptist spoke of this: Its for unbelievers at the final judgment. Like the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, ONLY Christ the final judge can can baptize with an everlasting judgment.

Other baptisms mentioned in scripture:

Mark 10:38 Jesus said can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
(NOTE: Here Jesus is speaking of His baptism into death. No water is used)

1 Cor 2:10 when the Nation passes through the red sea and were baptised into Moses. They crossed on dry land. No water is used!
