5.56 in a 223 chamber can lead to a pressure spike, I think I got it now. The military wants function first.

Is there much hog hunting in eastern Tx? How hard is it to get set up to do hog hunting? It sounds like it might be fun. Are there places that accept donated hog meat?

That is great accuracy, right out of the box.
69 grain bullet or a 55?
I load the 55 grain ballistic point and stoke it up quite a bit. (I tried Soft-points but they could not handle the velocity). They penetrate 3/4" of steel where the heavier and slower 7.62X39 will not. The loads I use have a 2" drop at 200 yards.

I think there are a bunch of hogs in east Texas.... I work with a guy that lives in Greenville, and he shoots hogs pretty regularly on his land.

I'm not sure how you would find a place to hunt.... I think most land owners have found that folks will pay them to get to hunt hogs, so they charge for it now.

You might try Googling it.... the good thing is that they are considered a "varmint", and there is no set season on them. You can hunt them anytime, night, day... doesn't matter. You DO have to have a valid hunting license, though.

I don't know if there are any charities that will accept hog meat.. I think many people just shoot them and leave the carcass where it falls. The meat from smaller hogs is really tasty, though. Anything under 200 pounds ought to be pretty good eating. It's pretty lean meat, and to me, tastes a little sweeter than domestic pigs.

I forgot, though... there is some open land up on the Red River where you can go for free to hunt. I've been up there once to hunt deer (didn't see anything), but a guy I work with went up there last year and said some guys were shooting at a hog, and he almost got run over by a large herd of them that spooked away from the shooting.

I'll probably go up there when the weather cools a little bit... take the AR. The one disadvantage is that there are no motorized vehicles allowed in the property. You park at the fence and walk in. It's a pretty good stroll back to the river from the fence. Tough on an old fat man like me..... lol

they are very wary, something about not wanting to be "offed"!
maybe bicycle in?
We lost a hunter here at a game farm, russian boar got him, you had to sign a waver to hunt there.

I think bicycles would be allowed. I think that some sort of game hauler like the Mule would be very helpful, if you get a deer or hog.

saw a 4 wheel two person bike at a garage sale yesterday, pretty much narrow paved road tires. gives a man ideas for hunting in such areas where powered vehicles are not permitted. there are much bigger balloon tires available as I have seen on some of the hardcore bikes, just a thought to keep us older hunters in it longer.

Why would a Christian have a gun? If we die, we die. I would probably run, and they could shoot me in the back so I don't see it coming.
