EVEN THE CHURCH IS IN NEED OF REPENTANCE..........Some have strayed from the Gospel of Christ, some have failed to do what God purposed them to do, some have not kept the Commandments of Faith established by Christ during His Ministry here on earth, and some go about to and fro seeking to cause distrust and disruptions within the Church Body.

Acts 3:19 - Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

2 Chronicles 7:14 - If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Luke 13:3 - I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Acts 17:30 - And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Ezekiel 18:21-23 - But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. (Read More...)

Revelation 2:5 - Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

Proverbs 28:13 - He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh [them] shall have mercy.

Matthew 4:17 - From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Romans 2:4 - Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

I was going to add this comment, but had to leave for Therapy before the Thread was posted.

Sooooooo

I certainly count myself in as one who needs to evaluate my thoughts, words, and deeds to be sure they are worthy of being called a child of God. It ain't easy though, and I know there are others here who feel the same way...... Yes, I know we are saved, sanctified, and God loves and keeps us, but we do need to do as He wills us to do!

Anyway,

I don't agree with much of what this old bird said, but I do like the fact that sometimes “we need to repent of our repentance.” That was said by Augustine.

Yes. We need to repent "change our mind" about what it means to "change our mind". Unbelief to belief. It's that simple.

Repentance is making a u-turn away from sin- which involves a change of mind, but no simply believing is not repenting. Satan believes but does not repent.

Repentance is making a u-turn away from sin
Did God make a U-turn from sin?

And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
Jonah 3:10 KJV

No, God repented - he changed his mind.

However we do see what making a u-turn is in the verse above

And God saw their works, that they u-turned from their evil way. Jonah 3:10

Nineveh's repentance is here, a few verses earlier:

So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
Jonah 3:5 KJV

First you repent (change your mind from unbelief) and after salvation you change your ways especially if you want fellowship with God, otherwise life will be far from fun.

Jesus equates repentance with faith:
For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it , repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
Matthew 21:32 KJV

In other words Jesus told the pharisees that even after all they witnessed they still didn't repent (change their mind) and believe.

Granville Sharp rule shows faith and repentance the same:

However, as the following Greek rule will prove irrefutably, repentance and faith BOTH refer to the same thing...

Rule I.
When the copulative kai connects two nouns of the same case, [viz. nouns (either substantive or adjective, or participles) of personal description respecting office, dignity, affinity, or connection, and attributes, properties, or qualities, good or ill,] if the article ho, or any of its cases, precedes the first of the said nouns or participles, and is not repeated before the second noun or participle, the latter always relates to the same person that is expressed or described by the first noun or participle: i.e. it denotes farther description of the first-named person...

SOURCE: Granville Sharp's Rule of Greek Exegesis
Acts 20:21 does not teach two separate actions at all! Repentance and faith are shown as the SAME THING in this verse. Here is why...

Any time two singular Greek nouns appear in a sentence and are connected by the conjunction "and" (kai in Greek) and the definite article "ho" (i.e., the, this, that, one, he, she, it) precedes the first noun, but not the second, they both mean the same person! So in the case of Acts 20:21, the absence of the definite article "ho" before “faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” links “repentance toward God” together with it. They refer to THE SAME THING. This absolutely means that the appositive, “our Lord Jesus Christ,” is referring to "God" in the first clause! Rendering this into the sentence it is then to be read as follows:

Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, ("EVEN") or ("that is") faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” http://www.jesusisprecious.org/articles/acts_20-21.htm
If God's people want to be blessed and healed, Christians must turn from their sins.

if my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV

Picky, picky............

There is more than one instance in the Old Testament where God told folks He was gonna do some serious damage to them, their families, their property........and some Prophet talked to the folks and convinced them that they needed to repent and return to being obedient to God.......or, just told them "You guys is toast!" as did Jonah.

The folks did repent...............AND God, because of His love and kindness and forgiving nature, also repented and decided NOT to mess 'em up. So, did God do a u-turn? Well, yes, cause He turned 180 degrees from what He said He was gonna do to what He ended up doing. Does NOT suggest that God sinned or ANY SUCH.

Your example shows that God did.

Yes. Nineveh did repent. They repented in Jonah 3:5

"And Nineveh believed God."

They changed their mind from unbelief.

Does NOT suggest that God sinned or ANY SUCH
Indeed. It doesnt. But wrong definition of repentance does because God repented.

Point being: God also turned..........as did the people of Nineveh......180 degrees from what He was gonna do, and, that pretty much describes a u-turn........

I didn't say otherwise. God repented. Nineveh turned from their sins. I find it amazing that one verse exposes several false ideas in the church today.

This statement is what I am referring to:

Did God make a U-turn from sin?

And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
Jonah 3:10 KJV

No, God repented - he changed his mind.

Which is why I said He did make a u-turn, but that in no way suggests He sinned.....

anyway...........just clarification.

God bless

That's the point I was making in reply to the post that defined repentance as turning from sin. Indeed the scriptures don't imply God sinned. But when people say "repentance means turning from sin," people are implying God sinned by their definition according to Jonah 3:10 which says God repented.

I think any logical human would agree to... how much more logical is G-d?

If I am beating and kicking the life out of "you" and I think to my self I should stop, then I think yes this is wrong I am going to stop. But I ignore my own brain and beat you to death.... Do "you" my behavior would have agreed with my belief or was just believing this is wrong enough!?!

now, how to go from hating repentance, to loving repentance?

did we forget about grace here?
