God doesn't call the able....he enables the called. It's not by might not of power but by my spirit says the Lord.

Spent this past couple of weeks learning about this same subject. A pastor, a preacher what does it take.

When one realizes that it is God that moves the sinners to repent, that it is God who pricks the heart, that it is God that adds to the church, and believes and lives the words that he preaches and teaches then the journey begins.

Blain pastor allistor begg truth for life ministry has your answers on his website called "the pastors study" I know you will enjoy it.
He starts with true worship....and ends speaking to over 300 pastors at a conference. It's going to blow your mind what he says.

My first essential for a pastor is that he is ethical. This means honest, transparent, and does the right thing, even at his own personal expense. Ethics is part of character. If you can’t trust a person’s word, as the story that was told about the pastor stealing and helping himself to whatever he wanted, that pastor should be judged and dismissed.

Mind you, I go to a congregation directed church. We had to dismiss or youth/children’s pastor recently. A lot of people left, because he was so charismatic, and they didn’t want to see him leave. But they didn’t even find out why the elder board wanted him dismissed. He wasn’t fulfilling any of the jobs in his contract. Like getting Sunday school materials ready. Instead, volunteers had to do his job. He was totally unorganized, he didn’t do this because he was lazy or evil. He just didn’t have the ability to fulfill his weekly tasks for ministry. Maybe ADHD? He was given huge support, money and names for a mentor, and he didn’t follow through on it!

Further, a pastor needs to be a leader. He has to have a vision from
God, and initiate ways to instil that direction in the church. No one mentioned administration, but our former pastor was a great teacher and preacher. He was personable and honest, but he couldn’t handle the administrative duties every senior pastor in a smaller church has. He got very depressed, took a leave of absence and then quit. Eventually he came back as a member, and he preaches, like me. We are the basic preaching team, with others also taking turns. Our pastor is a leader, gets people involved and challenges. Several of the younger women are preaching. One quit her job, she is going to seminary. That is inspiration.

Yet, this same leader, has horrible theology. He has a degree in counseling, and he saw so much hurt and pain, he abandoned tradition theology for open theology, which is a heresy. I don’t know how many people know this. It taints everything he preaches, for me. He doesn’t openly preach it, of course, but it makes all his sermons flat and empty.
So yes, theology counts!

Not every pastor is gifted in every area. The last church I was in, the pastor was an amazing man of God. He had a PhD in preaching. His sermons were Holy Spirit led. He had this amazing ability to preach at everyone’s level. A close friend of mine was from Peru, her English remains broken. We would sit together, and after church we would talk about the points that really hit us. Mostly, we didn’t agree, but he certainly touched us. Plus, he was big on passages and chapters. As opposed to a bunch of out of context verses.

That church had around 400 members, and most well to do. There was a business manager hat looked after the administrative duties, an associate pastor, who was big in missions, both evangelism and apologetics. The there was a youth pastor, etc.. It was big enough that people with gifts and training in specific areas used that gift.

Long post, and we always need to be discerning of a pastor. It is our duty to support the pastor(s), but also to be aware of areas where the pastor might need help, or if there are breeches of ethics, the proper people are advised.

I do agree with P4T that there aren’t a lot of biblical standards in this thread, including my post. I suppose that is the last thing, make sure you find a pastor that knows his Bible inside out, and loves Jesus more than anything.

What does it really take to be a pastor?
There are 2 kinds of pastors, pastors appointed by men and pastors appointed and set in the Church by God (1Cor 12v28, Eph 4v7-16)!

These are the qualities that God desires in His appointed pastors:

1Tim 3v1-7, Titus 1v5-9, James 5v13-18, 1Peter 5v1-9.

If a person claims to be a pastor and fails to fulfil the above criteria (including James 5v13-18), he/she really should question their qualifications for this most important ministry gift!

What exactly IS open theology?

He had a PhD in preaching.
How is that possible? Peter didnt have a PhD and he did better than anyone today did. John didnt have a PhD. Even Jesus didnt have a PhD. Why do we need one today.

The qualifications are clear its a family affair. Must be the husband of one wife (married) must together as a team, man and wife be able to keep children under control.

If God has not blessed a family with those qualification and they cannot control their own selves. God would not put them in a place to handle more than they already cannot.

Cool, I don't really belong to a denomination per say also, John the Baptist wasn't either he lived in woods eating locust and honey, pretty tuff dude in my book hehe...

Huh Locust were they cooked, fried or eaten raw either way man I would have a hard time setting down to dinner eating locusts. might be something to it who could stomach that and also probably tuff things in being a pastor as well who has the stomach for it.
Any one for choclate coated roaches or grasshoppers?

I think it was more like was revealed to Peter in a dream three times... Peter eat!

The time of reformation was at hand the ceremonial unclean food locust or Camel coat that John wore that previously represented the unsaved was fulfilled when the veil was rent . The prior time period using the ceremonial laws as a parable for the time then present had come to a end.

It is not for man to judge a pastor as good or lacking, that is God's job.
As long as he has not living in unrepentant sin or is teaching heresy, best keep you opinions to yourself.
Exactly.....the only two biblical reason to move against a pastor is....

a. If they are living an immoral life
b. If they are preaching obvious heresy

Any and all other reasons = contrary to the word.

One thing that we all need to remember......God from day one has been using imperfect men to proclaim his perfect truth.......I think too many people lift the pastor up to a position that he is not to be held in....God uses the BASE, Foolish things of the world to confound the wise and many times the pastor ends up being worshiped when in reality he is just a servant doing what God has called him to do.....and make no mistake....it is not a glorious as many assume.....it is difficult, painful at times, heart breaking, and probably one of the hardest most difficult things to deal with on the planet at times..........

Wow I have to admit I didn't know being a pastor was that in depth it seems like a very heavy and important job. I suppose I was to critical in my op as I was clearly ignorant of the all the things it really entails, I apologize to everyone if I was to critical in my post

Not so!

In 1Thess 5v21 Paul tells us to "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good."
Well there is a difference between judgment as in being judgmental and judgment as in discernment

So my thoughts are what does it take to be a pastor? Rather I suppose what does it take to be a good pastor?
In New Testament churches, the elders/bishops were the pastors or shepherds. And here is what God expects:

ACTS 20
28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

1 PETER 5
1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

Most evangelical and fundamental churches DO NOT follow the New Testament pattern at all. Frequently they hire and fire people who make the ministry a career and are judged by their academic accomplishments instead of their actual spiritual gifts. There was no hiring and firing in the apostolic churches.

Hehe ugg no way, but the grasshopper was permitted

Leviticus 11:22
22Of them you may eat: the locust according to its kind, the bald locust according to its kind, the cricket according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind.

Open theology basically says that God is not omniscient and he doesn't know the future. That is because human being's free will is more important than God being sovereign. That is just a terrible heresy, to me! Here are some links:

https://www.gotquestions.org/open-theism.htm

https://carm.org/what-is-open-thei

As for PhDs, I think Jesus had the equivalent of post doc work at the top theological schools in the world. After all, he knows everything. It is really silly that people say we have to do church exactly as it was in the early 1st century, but they don't feel bad about getting in their car, picking up a meal at a drive through, talking to someone on blue tooth through their smart phone as they drive home from church.

We don't need to live primitively, like even the richest person did in those days, which was simple compared to how the average person lives today.

Besides, didn't Paul tell Timothy to study the Word to handle it properly? That is what going for a PhD is all about. It is about learning, when God has called you, to correctly divide the Word of God.

"Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the message of truth accurately." 2 Tim. 2:15 NET

I know the more I learn, the more I am able to teach, preach, and even counsel and witness, because God has given me the tools, which the Holy Spirit can use to glorify God.

It is sad that people are so against a Biblical education, just because some people have gone astray. They probably would have gone astray anyway, because they were not led by the Spirit of God.

Thanks for that.
Your welcome my friend,

you mentioned John's clothes as well. IMO I think the garments was firmiliar to him.

2 kings 1
7 And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words? 8 And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.
