You know the scripture…

but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
1 Peter 3:15 NASB

I find this to be a solid reason to spend time in the word, and in these kinds of discussions that discuss His expressed truth. I think not only does it help us to fully understand what it is we are believing, but it helps sanctify our deliveries and methods of walking in humility, with regards to the gentleness and reverence.

After reading and participating in a thread, though, I am now pondering something. We know one doesn't have to hear the word, by strictly reading the word themselves, right? Not everyone is able to read or has access the bible. We know that it is Faith in Him, Yeshua, alone that brings us home to our Father. We know He is able to reveal the truth of Himself in whatever way He wants to.

I have so much to learn still but have derived much pleasure in digging in. However, what would you say to someone who says, ”I believe in Jesus, I just don't care to read the bible? How important is our reading the word for ourselves in regards to our faith? Is it just an issue of it blessing our walk with Christ, helping our heart for servitude to Him, or is it deeper than that? Do You think reading the word can become a form of idolatry?

I am of the belief that one can never spend too much time, seeking Him out, in follow through, in service, in prayer, in fellowship, and in His word, hoping the meditations of one's mind and heart are pleasing to Him. My thoughts and actions are not always pleasing to Him, for sure. This question, though, is not about me, though, but about Him and His living word?

I would appreciate your input on this matter.

My two cents:

Luke 10:39 [blb] -

"And she had a sister called Mary, who also, having sat down at the feet of the Lord, was listening to His word [G3056 - logos / logon]."

[quoting from Bible Hub]

3056 lógos (from 3004 /légō, "speaking to a conclusion") – a word, being the expression of a thought; a saying. 3056 /lógos ("word") is preeminently used of Christ (Jn 1:1), expressing the thoughts of the Father through the Spirit.

[3056 (lógos) is a common term (used 330 times in the NT) with regards to a person sharing a message (discourse, "communication-speech"). 3056 (lógos) is a broad term meaning "reasoning expressed by words."]

[end quoting]

Where 1Cor2:16b states, "But we have the mind of Christ," I believe this refers to what is the "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now" of John 16:12, 12-15 (said before His death on the Cross), which I believe refers to what is written/recorded in Scripture [what was given to be recorded in Scripture] following His death/resurrection. "...I have yet many things to say unto you..." (the highest revelation, so to speak).

Reading the word is very important. But its even more important to understand it.
I see "bible idolators" at times...it is pretty frequent actually that people ONLY focus on the word and completely loose touch with God.
I think U cant know God without the word. Reading the word (even if its just a few quotes a day) help me to just stay in Christ and feel free. I notice if I dont, I feel like theres burden on me.
Thats just me tho. Hugs

i would think that a person who says this or behaves this way has not thought it through. i'd try ((in my oafish, scatterbrained & bumbling way)) to help them think more clearly about what they're saying with such an opinion -- because in my mind, if you really believe, then what book in all the world could possibly be more important to read? it's like saying that you love your valentine, but not even reading the notes she sent you. you're either wrong about the love you express, or you're a bit daft.

I would quote a verse and then say....if you are truly saved you will desire a study, knowledge, greater understanding of the word of GOD...

AS new born babes desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby.....!

Just like a baby needs it's mother milk/formula a born again believer's spirit will DESIRE the word of God for spiritual growth...NOT only that, but what happens if a baby/child is starved by a milk only diet.....they will be severely stunted in growth...such is the case with many believers, especially in these massive, give the dog a bone churches where the diet consists of mainly milk toast or watered down sugar coated milk water....

We need milk, soft meats, meat to grow to maturity........

In the very minimum, the salvation of one who has no desire for the word of God is suspect....IMO

y'all may have noticed from my conversations on the forum that i think it more honorable to give a person the benefit of the doubt, btw, and assume they are batty :)

take me for instance; i know i love Him, that i want only to please Him, and to know only truth and despise lies.
but that i do a lot of moronic things. i'm nuts, probably, not trying to be or do wrongly.

My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words.
Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;
for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body.
Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.
Keep your mouth free of perversity;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze directly before you.
Give careful thought to the c paths for your feet
and be steadfast in all your ways.
Do not turn to the right or the left;
keep your foot from evil.
(Proverbs 4:20-27)
i think that ↑ stresses the importance of hiding His words in our hearts, and more than that, as @Demi777 said, coming to full understanding of them - and walking in them. His words are life, as we read here too:

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
(John 6:66-70)

life is to know Him, and knowledge of Him comes through His word. where else would we go to find life?
and rather ominously, as Demi also said, Christ answers them saying that even though He chose them - they who are all there with Him, not leaving, one of them is a devil. so being in and near the Bible all the time doesn't in and of itself bring you into the light; you can still be in darkness with your head full of Bible verses, if they're not opened to you by the Spirit, if you aren't in Him. people with a lot of so called '
Bible knowledge' twist the scripture into an almost unrecognizable mess all the time, and pervert it even subtly, too.
i believe she's right about it being possible to make the Word into an idol - some people can quote the words and they're gibberish; some people quote the same words and they are eternal life. it's God that makes the seeds grow :)

I would appreciate your input on this matter.

Years ago, on a fateful Good Friday in 1969, the Holy spirit entered into my heart, into all of me, with everything turning to light and the light coming into me had a message, "Everything is going to be just fine." All of this occurred when I was repenting of the material existence and the sudden realization came into me with force that the One Who Is is everything, and this existence is unworthy.

Although I had always given "credit" to Jesus Christ, I had never been convinced, and I had never been ablt to read the Word, not even a phrase for it did not make sense.

I was so joyous with the infilling of the Holy Spirit that I could not shut up. All my activities came to a halt, in this age, and all I could do is share my experience while having been "given" a Bible to read, long story too. I sould find myself reading many times after having shared what I was reading for the first time with other students. Yes, I would open my mouth and speak, and I learned, myself, from what I was sharing One time I went into the restroom in the Student Union, and there was a card likie a business card stuck into the frame of the mirror. I took it back to my reading and lo I had boxed in a passage,. Looking to see what the card was, it was teh exact same passage.

For three years I could not put down my Bible, going summers to the Rocky Mountains to study and share with anyone who would hear me. Actually, I read, and still read aloud in order for the universe to hear God's Word..

My point here is that I understand implicitely that no one needs to have the written Word if the Holy Spirit is guiding. Anyone who thinks he or she is capable of seizing truth by simply reading dead text without the Holy Spirit is deceiving himself or herself. Yes! The Bible is most defintely an idol, to many, for apostasy does indeed abound today.

This is why,in my hear, soul and mind, when I do read the Word and only feel I understand something it becomes a determination for me, but never a conclusion unless the Holy Spirit confirms the matter. I learned this from our dear Savior's mother, Mary, who when she did ot understand something about her Son, she would keep it to herself. I always understoo she did this for later revelation or continued mystery whichever was our Father's will for her, since she was but a woman, as a man is but a man, flesh.

All blessings in Jesus Christ, Yeshua...…….Yeshi Yahu (MyRedeemerYahweh).

PS...thank you for your wonderful posts...Love always in Yeshua...

How important? Its a matter of faith .His faith working in us...... our new faith, the gift of God. We who are called apologist defend the faith of God or belief of God. It is what defends us .Like putting on the Armor of God. The commandment in the Greek I have been told is to put it on and not take it off. No armor for the rear .He is the rear guard as well as the lead.

Can it turn into idolatry ? Anything that is not of faith that comes from hearing God is sin. Can a husband our wife neglect their families in doing so? I think it is possible .The B word balance is needed. Much prayer and patient partners are needed.

I agree with a few posters. Knowing the word and “Knowing” the word are not the same. Sadly many people can quote you verse after verse. Yet not know the word at all (pharisees are a great example)

As for your question. Scripture is Gods love letter to his creation. It tells us who he is, It tells us what happened. It tells us why it happened. It tells us what he did to correct the problem. And it shows us example after example of him using screwed up people like us to do mighty works through his power. And it even shows the the end, as it shows us that God will not allow this evil to go on forever. He has a plan. And what our eternaity will be like.

This is just a basic guideline, there is so much more. So if your new father adopts you and saves you, Would you not want to know more about him and the reason things are the way they are?

Wow, I love that you shared this jaunt down memory road. What a blessing He and His word has been in your life.

I want to study more about Mary keeping things she did not understand to herself. U know another take away from what you shared...

I read, and still read aloud in order for the universe to hear God's Word.

I love looking for edifying take aways so thank you. I think I'll give this a try.

Thanks Brother, love and God Bless to you and yours :D

I couldn't agree more, but never picked up on Him watching our back (rear), that we are not to guard that. What a comforting blessing He is. And yes yes yes to that b word for sure. I think Order, which is one of His specialties resides in Balance of everything. It is so easy to get out of balance, but we were given tools to see it and know shifting is required. So I have a thought for you on balance. We know balance is good and stagnation bad, so why does equalibrium cause stagnation. Is it because even balance needs balance, lol.

Absolutely and the more I learn, the more I want to learn. Knowing and Know are very different. I think one speaks to understanding, and having knowledge but the other speaks to having the experience of knowing His presence, like when we are in worship and praise.

PS...thank you for your wonderful posts...Love always in Yeshua...

Thanks Brother, love and God Bless to you and yours :D[/QUOTE]

I should say, I read aloud, but not so loud that others may hear me, only for the creation to hear. You know.

HEB. 4:12.
For The Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,
piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow,
and is a Discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
