Fifty-eight former US national security officials have rebuked President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration to build a border wall.

Their joint statement said "there is no factual basis" for an emergency at the US-Mexico border.

Former officials from both parties have signed the letter, including United Nations Ambassador Thomas Pickering and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Mr Trump declared an emergency after Congress refused to pay for the wall.

"Under no plausible assessment of the evidence is there a national emergency today that entitles the president to tap into funds appropriated for other purposes to build a wall at the southern border," the statement said.

"In the face of a nonexistent threat, redirecting funds for the construction of a wall along the southern border will undermine national security by needlessly pulling resources from Department of Defence programmes that are responsible for keeping our troops and our country safe and running effectively."

The officials also note that contrary to Mr Trump's repeated claims of an illegal crossing "crisis" involving violent criminals and drugs, border crossings are near 40-year lows, and most illicit substances cross through legal ports of entry.

"This proclamation will only exacerbate the humanitarian concerns that do exist at the southern border," the statement said.

"There are real humanitarian concerns at the border, but they largely result from the current administration's own deliberate policies towards migrants."

Another viewpoint ... just as valid

GOP rep says after deployment to border that situation warrants emergency declaration
Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said Sunday that he believes the situation at the southern border constitutes a national emergency after witnessing it firsthand when he was deployed to Arizona with his Air National Guard unit.
"I went down there kind of undecided," Kinzinger said on "Face the Nation" on CBS.
"I think if this was just an issue of immigration it wouldn’t constitute a national emergency," he added. "But what I saw was really disturbing."
He recounted witnessing a woman "hunkered down in the desert" after the individuals who brought her across the border abandoned her, as well as another instance where his unit found 70 pounds of methamphetamine being transported into the country.
Kinzinger acknowledged that government statistics show border apprehensions are at the lowest levels in decades, but said what he saw firsthand showed drugs and human trafficking pose a significant problem.
As a result, Kinzinger said he won't vote to block President Trump's national emergency declaration to secure funds that have not been congressionally appropriated for his long-desired wall along the southern border.
"I wish this would’ve happened a different way," he said, but added that he believes Trump has the authority to declare an emergency.
"If this was just about immigration I would disagree," he said. "I do think this is a security threat. It’s a security threat with the amount of drugs coming over the border and the human trafficking that I’ve seen."

And just an fyi ... Donald Trump is not a favorite of Adam Kinzinger. Mr. Kinzinger did not support Trump for president in 2016 and has not been favorable toward President Trump since then. Interesting that Mr. Kinzinger would support Mr. Trump regarding this issue ...

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers ordered the state's 112 troops to leave their posts along the US' southern border Monday evening.

The Democrat's order makes Wisconsin the third state to pull National Guard personnel from the border this month, citing President Donald Trump's rhetoric around border security.

"There is simply not ample evidence to support the president's contention that there exists a national security crisis at our Southwestern border," Evers said in a news release. "Therefore, there is no justification for the ongoing presence of Wisconsin National Guard personnel at the border."

Evers added that the border should be the responsibility of US Customs and Border Protection.

He handed down an executive order to bring the National Guard troops home Monday.

The order came weeks after New Mexico and California ordered their own National Guard troops to come home from the border. The Democratic governors from both states rejected the concept of a crisis at the southern border and criticized the President for his actions. Their decision came prior to Trump's declaration of a national emergency on the border.

"The Border 'emergency' is a manufactured crisis. And California will not be part of this political theater. Which is why I have given the National Guard a new mission," said California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a February 11 release.

Multiple other states withdrew personnel from the border in June in response to the administration's practice of separating undocumented migrant families.

Evers' announcement came the same day that 58 former national security officials issued a statement condemning Trump's use of his national emergency powers.

Members of Congress are also preparing to vote on legislation that would rebuke the declaration of a national emergency and halt efforts to build a wall on the border.

undocumented migrant families.
Yup, gotta love this euphemism!

Such lies that you promote.

When I think of how my parent's generation came to Canada and what they had to do to become citizens, and then to say that there is no crisis at the border when families have suffered the loss of a loved one????

The death of one innocent person at the hands of someone who is an ILLEGAL immigrant is a crisis in my book.

Of course the Liberals want open borders, we are not surprised they are coming against the wall.

It only serves to prove the utter depth of depravity that has griped them.
