Hey everyone,

Some talk in another thread about men who carry sewing kits (which is AWESOME!) got me thinking...

* What kinds of things do you do that are "normally" seen as something done by the other gender?

* What talents/skills have you been told that you do "really well" "for a guy" or "for a girl"?

* Who taught you how to do said skills? Was it from a member of the opposite gender?

It could be anything from cooking and sewing to playing sports, working with power tools, or even climbing trees. :)

I also realize that in modern times, the idea of what was once strictly thought of as being "for girls" and "for boys" might be more overlapped than ever before (which I personally really like, because who doesn't need a variety of skills to make it in today's world?)

But I have known a few guys who never "bothered" with cooking, cleaning, or housework because it was considered to be strictly "women's work", as well as women who were completely reliant on a man to pay the bills or balance a checkbook. I'm certainly not saying that this is necessarily wrong, I'm just saying they found life to be extraordinarily challenging when they didn't have someone to cook, clean, or manage money for them.

* What are some life skills that you believe everyone should know a little bit about, regardless of gender?

*Disclaimer*

I know that the title of this thread might be seen as a little controversial at first glance... which is one of the reasons why I chose "OutWrite Trouble" as my CC moniker. Every now and then, we might have a poster who just reads the title and comes in with spiritual guns blazing, all because they only read the title and not the actual post to know what the discussion was really about.

And... Why yes, folks, this is how exciting my life really is--that I can actually find something like that amusing.

So... Please make my life a little more exciting by contributing your thoughts (and skills) to this thread. :)

Okay - when I first saw the title I was ready to move on (not going to touch that thread) - but when I saw who the OP was I suspected that there was more than meets the eye... too funny - the ol' bait n switch trick...
Reminds me of a funny story that my son shared with me on the topic of you title and the ol bait and switch - that caught one would be seducer by surprise ... sorry that's all I can share with the CC audience...

Anyway for the record I took a year long Home-Economics class with one quarter/semester of sewing in middle school. Yes, I was raised by a strong widowed single woman; but it was not until I joined the Marine Corps that I was forced to learn how to sew something with a purpose. It was in the USMC that I learned the habit of carrying a sewing kit along with other handy pieces of gear in my gear bag...

A couple weeks ago, one of the coaches blew a hole in his pants and asked if I happened to have any tape in my gear bag - I pulled out four different kinds of tape - he chose to use the packing tape (on the inside of his pants) - wasn't even noticeable...

The gear bag has come in handy over the years to repair uniforms, equipment, sew on competition patches as well as to assist with endless number of injuries...

Cooking. Definitely cooking. If you are good at it you will never fail to be admired. Furthermore, it is the gift that keeps on giving....

I have to make a confession...

I have never seen "The Notebook".

I'm generally not one for "chick flicks" and it was one of those movies that absolutely everyone was talking about, so as a strange sort of social rebellion, I've just never watched it.

However, after reading your post... I may just have to reconsider.
Seoulsearch - given this thread - I just couldn't resist copying and pasting my response from the "Why do you wanna get Married" thread to respond the the 'Chick Flicks' reference...

Too funny - I seem to be either a helpless romantic or a gluten for punishment as I am a sucker for "The Notebook" kinda 'chick flicks'... lol...

Yes, while they too often tug at my heart strings and are emotionally powerful - they often serve to recharge my energy for positivity, hope and faith for something more... Ultimately, they help me to realize what it is that I am missing and that the heart craves...

Ok, I must confess. For a girl, I am extremely mechanically inclined. I am also thrilled at the sight of heavy-duty machinery and construction equipment. Excavators, dozers, front-end & backhoe loaders, compactors, rock drills & crushers, towers & scaffolding, winches, hoists & pulleys. Even air compressors! Ooooh boy, I’m just mesmerized watching the crew utilize these tools to lay the foundation, begin the framework, and then erect awesome architecture. The engineering that goes into it, the sheer talent, and hard work it takes to create the structures, it’s all very, very fascinating to me. And it’s not unlike me to just stand there oohing and ahhing, thoroughly captivated by the workers operating the enormous equipment. I even take photographs of the stages of development.

Btw, throughout my life the men in my family taught me to use and respect tools, even power tools. And when I go to yard sales or thrift shops, I not only look for kitchen gadgets & girly things, I look for tools, too. :giggle:

I bake sourdough bread (and basically live off the stuff) and for some reason people seem to think baking bread is a woman's task. I don't get it - male bakers are a part of history. Most of the bakeries I know of have a little old wrinkled man in the back making the food. I've seen guys baking stuff in lots of movies, TV shows and books. But for some reason people think it is odd that I'm a guy who bakes bread.

To those people I say YOU WON'T GET SO MUCH AS A SINGLE CRUMB! Go buy your spongy, gummy, floppy store loaf bread. You ain't getting a slice of sourdough, not one single paper thin slice. So there! :p

Hmmm... the closest thing to this is being told I am in touch with my feminine side because I am aware that women struggle with emotional issues and can offer support?

I have also had women comment on me being “such a dude” for not remembering the specifics of romance plot lines on tv shows. Like I couldn’t remember when Delenn and Sheridan first kissed on Babylon 5.

I was raised by my mom mostly and kind of wish I had asked her to show me more on how to cook and things like that. She was really reluctant, though. She was very old school so I think she expected me to find someone to cook for me? I did do the mowing and most of those sorts of chores growing up instead. She would occasionally point out women mowing their own lawn when we would be out driving and say something like “she looks like an idiot, why is she mowing her own lawn?”

EDIT - oh, I almost forgot. Some folks occasionally tell me I write like a woman, whatever that means. This is mostly on message boards.

I remember loving a particular amine for 'boys only' when I was younger but that didnt stop me from enjoying the series up to this day. I guess when some people go overboard then its a problem but honestly I dont think certain activities must be labeled as for 'boys or girls. I pray about all my problems and Jesus will show me the way through his Word. I guess nothing beats prayer lol

I’m a busy-body mother-in-law myself. Maybe that’s something we’re supposed to be? Ehm, but I don’t think being that fits this thread’s gender exchange bill, quite the contrary lol.

GENDER is a political far left term.
They have obviously indoctrinated Christian's too with this satanic idea. That we would use or endorse the use of this word.
We have a sex. It is male or female. That's it, as far as I know.
If there is anything I missed in the bible regarding this, please let me know.

Gender, just like fetus is a scientific medical term that the far left has high jacked for political purposes.

They have hijacked far too many things. Gay is no longer happy and a rainbow is no longer a sign of God's promise.
