Hey Everyone,

This thread was inspired by our very own Gracie. :) Her post about writing threads here in Singles got me thinking about the hobbies, interests, and aptitudes that God has put into all of us that make us so unique. :)

* Tell us about something you love, have a knack for, or that you feel defines YOU as a person-- it could be a hobby (like baking or working on cars), career (is there a certain career path you've ALWAYS been drawn to?), interest (music, sports, etc.)--anything that you couldn't see being "you" without.

* What got you interested in that particular thing, and why do you love it? (Does it remind you of someone, does it help you relieve stress, does it enhance the quality of your life, etc.?)

I love hearing about what people do -- and why they do them.

So... I'll guess I'll kick start this by answering Gracie's post about writing threads. I would say that writing is a crucial part of me, but I don't consider myself to be a writer -- I'm just someone who has a great interest in communication, and writing is my primary tool (or weapon :)) of choice.

My sole purpose of writing is for either two-way or multi-way conversation. I see a thread idea as being the starter log that will hopefully start an entire bonfire of conversation! Everyone who posts adds a valuable log to the fire, making it burn all the brighter in the process.

I have several people who have inspired this along the way:

1. Grade school teachers who taught me how to answer a letter by reading line by line, and writing something in response to every paragraph that the sender had written. I still do this today when I receive an email, PM, or longer text. If it's someone I feel comfortable with, I take notes as I read so that I hopefully won't forget anything important in my answer.

2. People who were willing to answer me back as I was growing up (via pen pals and general correspondence,) as well as teachers who shaped my writing style. I had to write a paper for a high school science class (all I remember is that it was something about electricity), and I entitled it, "Watt a Switch!" The teacher gave me a lot of positive feedback on that, and that's probably what started my love of word plays and titles that pull a bait-and-switch. It's just that now I apply it to informal communications rather than academic papers.

3. And finally, the inmates I used to write for some time back in the days when I was more active in ministry really polished it off. This was a lesson that seriously shaped my communications into what it is today (though I know I still have a lot to work on), for both the good and bad. While it's true that I've never had my character shredded to pieces more than by people who are literally sitting around waiting to analyze every word, it also taught me to learn how to attempt nearly every possible expression through writing.

And one of the inmates gave me one of the highest compliment I've ever received -- he said that reading my letters felt like actually sitting down and talking to someone, and that's something I strive for in every thread. My highest hope is that these threads will feel closer to sitting down and talking with a group of friends rather than just words on the screen, which I know can be life-saving for a group of singles who are trying to navigate what can be, at times, a very lonely path.

Ok-- I've shared far too much about me, and something that I love...

So now I'd really like to hear about something YOU love, and why you love it. :)

Those of you who know me here (which is pretty much nobody anymore) know that I love airplanes. It all started in 1972 when my grandma was dying halfway around the world and we flew to see her. Love you, grandma. :( The trip took a few days and there were several stops and different planes and airlines along the way. We spent a couple nights at airports. I fell in love with airplanes then. These huge, beautiful, graceful machines that tower above everything, even taller than the buildings that we boarded them from. I was simply in awe and mesmerized by them. Then when we were in flight my mom and I would look out the window at the most beautiful landscape passing by so slowly with the clouds at eye level or even beneath us. And the image of that giant wing out there in the cold, thin air.

At night there would be nothing but complete black darkness out the window. If you look real close just before it gets completely dark you can just barely make out the shape of the wing against the endless black sky.

Hmm... things I love, things that define me...

You could take away baking bread and I would still be the same. I wouldn't be quite as happy eating heavily processed food, but I would survive.

If all the cocoa plants in the world contracted a blight and there was no more chocolate I would carry on.

If my computers all blew up and they shut down the internet overnight I would be disconcerted, but I would manage without it just fine.

But you do NOT take away my music. Never. I can't imagine me without music.

I love my old Mercedes Benz 500SL convertible that my dad left me when he went home to Jesus (hopefully). I’m never driving it. I just occasionally get behind the wheel and pretend I’m driving. I’m so afraid I’d crash if I took it out for a ride. His half emptied bottle of Jim Beam is still in the car lol.

Zero,

This was a gorgeously-expressed post.

Thank you very much for sharing!

It's funny how we often make posts and think that our words don't really mean anything and won't be remembered, especially out in the vast void of cyberspace... but they do, and they will.

I remember a long time ago when you wrote a post about your love of planes and said that to you, they were "sleeping giants", which I thought was an awesome description.

I'm not in airports very often, but when I am, and walk past the window of planes that are parked and eagerly waiting, I think to myself, "Oh look! It's Zero's Sleeping Giants." :)

I very much enjoy expressing myself through the written word.
Stemming from my enjoyment of reading.
( collegiate level in 5th grade )

Though writing is a double edged sword, because I seem to do my best work while in
the throes of heartache and pain.

Same go s for music.

I'm an atrocious spellerer though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was your above quote (regarding lags needing to be staggered) referring to wall or floor construction?

Evidently I love knowing how things work. Because I am obsessed with electromagnetism, engineering, mechanics, aerodynamics, and astrophysics. Nope, I'm def no Einstein. I can only grasp the very basics of things but it doesn't seem to stop me from trying to understand it anyway.

Hi kim, thanks for the fascinating thread. Funny how I also had penpals as a child, and one pal later as a student, was an inmate. Unlike you though, I probably have less time to write now as I used to, but do appreciate quickly reading (and sometimes replying to) others' writings when there is opportunity. i liked to write because that was probably the easiest way to reach others who were far away, as relatives who went abroad, also former classmates. Overseas calls cost then, and writing made it easier to express more, when u could even add pages when theres a lot of news=).

One other is the melodious stuff. Cant really tell why, but i remember our parents letting us watch that Sound of Music thing, and i pretending i was Maria singing to my heart's content in the high mountains. Even as i let go of other things, nowadays i cannot help looking for, or keeping/reproducing some music sheets, for example, which i want to learn later. I heard 'Yesu, joy of man's desiring' some time ago again and said, why thats a nice pc to learn after all these yrs. So i printed it to play.

Then again, some things just seem to come naturally. As i sometimes help to baby sit grandkids, i sing child songs that come to mind. My grandson has a wildlife book where a page shows fishermen in a boat at sea, w/ sea creatures and corrals shown below. Suddenly i remembered 'Peter, James and John in a sailboat' wc i sang to him, and said those were peter and james on the boat, and another man diving in picture, was john, hehe. Few days later, he was asking to sing the song as he went thru his book. His younger sis, when its time for a nap and i lay her on my tummy with a hug, will lower her head seeming ready to sleep with 'I will lie down and sleep, and sleep in peace' from Psalm 4.8.

Hi Mar,

Thanks so much for posting. I'm always glad to meet someone else who understands the joys of good old-fashioned snail mail.

I also loved the part where you said that you were "pretending (you) were Maria singing to (your) hearts content in the high mountains", just like in The Sound of Music. I love stories like this, when the people who influence us or even just our imaginations take us far, far away, and sometimes carry us right into another reality.

I have to admit, a while back, I was hemming a pair of pants, and I pretended that I was a contestant on "Project Runway", except maybe without Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn critiquing my every stitch. :)
