His point was valid....under the law 10% went straight to the priesthood anything above that was considered an offering. And we are not under the law....under the banner of Grace we purpose in our heart what to give and give it with a cheerful heart......simple as....and for the record I give 25 to 30% and the Lord has blessed me greatly.......
That's great! Although our blessings are spiritual, not worldly.

Proverbs 3 AMPC
9 Honor the Lord with your capital and sufficiency [from righteous labors] and with the firstfruits of all your income;

10 So shall your storage places be filled with plenty, and your vats shall be overflowing with new wine.

This has nothing to do with tithing.

“10 So shall your barns be filled with plenty, and your presses shall burst out with new wine. (The word “firstfruits” speaks of the tenth, and, therefore, tithing. Tithing is carried over into the New Testament, as well. The Melchizedek Priesthood is eternal and must be supported by the children of Abraham, which include every Believer [Heb. 6:20; 7:1-11].)”

Why limit giving to 10%?
NT calls us to be generous, with happy hearts.

Generous: “(of a person) showing a readiness to give more of something, as money or time, than is strictly necessary or expected.”

Mark 12:42-44 (KJV)
42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

so if the properity message is real, why did this widow not have overflowing barns and riches, apparently she gave more than any one else.

Be careful what you hear and more careful of what you teach.

The tithe is a 10th, everything over is an offering.

Swaggart is simply wrong on these issues.

The passages that lay out the requirements for tithing are not those that address firstfruits. The two are distinct.

Tithing (under the Law) is addressed in four places: Leviticus 27, Numbers 18, Deuteronomy 12, and Deuteronomy 14. None of those passages discuss firstfruits.

Firstfruits (as an offering) is addressed in many places, but only twice in Scripture is it mentioned alongside "tithing"; in 2 Chronicles 31:5, where "tithe" seems to indicate amount rather than legal requirement; in Nehemiah 10:37, where they are clearly distinct, and in Nehemiah 12:44, where they are mentioned together, but not conflated, again making them distinct.

Nowhere in Scripture are "firstfruits" directly identified as "tithes" or vice-versa.

As for the passage in Hebrews, it says absolutely nothing about supporting the church through tithing. It says absolutely nothing about a requirement for tithing under the new covenant. It says absolutely nothing about supporting the eternal priesthood at all.

It is clear that Mr. Swaggart is teaching a false message here.

Maybe you should stop promulgating his errors.

My church still uses the term tithing, and asks for a tithe the first Sunday of the month. The support is that Jesus used the term tithe and did not denounce tithing. I have also had say a pastor say we are stealing from God if we do not give 10%. I asked my previous pastor if we can spread the giving between the church and Christian charities and he grew upset and did not answer my question.

I do think we need to get away from the term tithing which is more a mandate and contrary to giving with a cheerful heart. What we give needs to feel sacrificial and not like "spare change." I have found that whatever I gave at that time felt like "spare change" after a while and so I increased my giving. The feeling of "spare change" will be different for everyone, for some it will start small, for others 20% of income will feel like "spare change." To respond to the OP, I would give whatever small amount I can so that we practice the act of giving, even if it meant cutting out some small expense somewhere in the budget, eating out one less meal per week, etc.

Well Paul reminded us that he who sow sparingly shall also reap sparingly.

But you are correct, giving with a cheerful attitude is key. So if you feel 10% will make you give grudgingly, it will be better to reduce that % and give cheerfully.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, the more you give the more you get back. Giving should be done for reasons other than what we get back.

It is difficult for people to go from not giving at all to 10%, most givers will not give cheerfully if this is the case.

Of course your motivation for giving should not be to get anything back. We give because God himself is a giver. He tithe his son before we did anything Romans 5:8,
and he reaped a large Body of Christ.

But still God will not be a debtor to anybody. That is a principle explained in various parts of the Bible.

So start from 1% if you need to, then move up. Its like playing poker, you begin at low stakes, gain confidence, before moving up.

If I don’t tithe, I’ll never know what could have been......
